Who has read this manga? If you haven't, you should, since IT'S FREAKIN' HILARIOUS!

The plot follows Daisuke Niwa, who discovers on his 14th birthday that a genetic condition he has causes him to transform into the legendary Phantom Thief, Dark, when ever he has romantic feelings for his sweetheart, Risa Haruda. The only way to break this "curse" is to recieve Risa's love... and have her twin sister Riku fall in love with Dark at the same time! Unfortunatey, due to an unfortuate mishap, Risa loves Dark and Riku loves Daisuke! The plot is full of twists and turns, and it's a really comical read.

I borrowed Volumes 1-4 off of my friend, and so far it's been a really good series. What do you think?

I used to be but I got tired of a lot of the cliched plot devices you run into in manga and anime.

Cute young girl in high school somehow discovers (usually via a mystical 3rd party) that she's the most powerful (insert magical/mystical profession) in x generations and all the (insert mystical/magical monsters or servants of Bad Guy here) want to kill/rape her and they probably have odd appendages for doing so. Cute-but-shy-but-strong-and-determind boy attempts to save her and fails but this awakens the spark of True Real Ultimate Power within her that will save them both and blah blah blah. Insert a few fanservice scenes of her nearly naked and you're done.
Or she's an outcast of some sort and proves herself. And has an impossibly cute dog/cat/other that helps either save the day or provide comic relief.
Throw in liberal amounts of self-doubt and internal torment/angst and you have a best-seller.

I just got tired of most of it.
Fast-forward several years and now my daughter's into it... Fruits Basket, DEARs, etc. Half the time, I can read 2 chapters and predict how it'll end.... frustrates the crap out of her, hehe.

*fakes operator voice* I'm sorry, but the anime in question does not fit any of your chosen archetypes. Please try again.

I'm sorry, i just had to crack a joke.

But some of the newer and darker anime doesn't quite fit that criteria. Take FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST, for example. For one thing, the main characters are a teenage alchemist with a mech arm and leg and a soul in a suit of armor, and the story is them trying to find a way to retrieve their normal bodies by finding the Philosopher's Stone. Not exactly the cute fluffy anime type, especially when you throw in a power-crazy religoius leader, a mad mass murderer, an overzealous military, a man who uses his daughter and family dog to create a talking chimera, and souless creatures named after the seven deadly sins... CRAP! Now im going to have to start a new thread about FMA!

And I won't even get into the gory details of Trinity Blood, only that it's about vampires (that fill the mental picture?)

I watch a lot of anime, and let me tell you, not all of it is that fluffy kids crap.

DN Angel, well, it may seem kiddish to you, but it has a lot of slight sexual references that jsut may push it into the 13+ range...

No, I know... that's just one of the many many cliches.
I'd list them all but I'd be here awhile and likely bore myself to death.
The last good anime I watched was Grave of the Fireflies. Before that, go figure, Miyazaki... Howl's Moving Castle, Sen To Chihiro, and Mononoke-hime. That and Ghost in the Shell:SAC and Serial Experiments: Lain. That one was pretty interesting.

One of my biggest gripes with anime is the voice "acting".
Way too many New York-style "tough-guy" voices or kawaii-ass little "gasp!" going on for my taste. I'm basically just tired of anime, I think... which sucks because it has awesome potential... it just doesn't deliver, imo.

That said, Ranma 1/2 tickles the crap outta me, despite the fact that it's lame, derivative and cliched all to hell and back.

Ranma 1/2... isn't that about some guy who changes into a girl whenever he falls in hot water? That's what a friend of mine said, but i don't believe him.
