Is it just me, or is it that using little children as a scare factor annoys me more than scares me in a horror movie?

I don't know, that undead boy in Pet Cemetary was one little pesky SOB. I found him scary.

It's a commonly used trope because children are cute and innocent. While it has lost it's novelty value due to being overused in the wrong contexts (just like pop-up headlamps), it nevertheless adds to the atmosphere in some horror movies.

See http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CreepyChild

Careful, you could end up spending way too much time on tvtropes.org. I realize you may well already know this.

I agree, I just find it annoying because it seems to me, IMO, that it's used all the time.

That's sorta the stock-and-trade of Japanese horror.

Evil dolls, killer teddy bears, possessed toys in general. I know that some adults have a phobia of such things but it's hard for me to understand since toys have always been a big part of my life and sometimes helped me get through scary stuff. Of course some toys are creepy either on purpose or unintentionally but that never made me afraid of all toys, while some other people had to give theirs away after seeing Child's Play, especially if they were the talking kind. I even once read on Kindertrauma about someone who had to give their Teddy Ruxpin and some other toys away but they made sure their new owner would take good care of them so the toys wouldn't come back to kill him/her. Umm, first of all your toys are not alive, and second why aren't you worried they'll kill their new owner? But like all phobias, it's irrational. The same thing goes for clowns. Most real clowns are just doing their job entertaining people and under all that makeup and wacky hair they look like everyday people. Although it could be that their white make-up, big red noses and scraggly hair trigger your instincts that this person is sick and therefore should be avoided. Well, it's getting late, I should probably stop playing psychologist now. :)

Actually, as a little kid - three or four - I used to have nightmares about huge teddy bears. Then when I saw that sort of imagery in the movie A Company Of Wolves, I thought: Ah, I wasn't the only one scared of great big stuffed animals!
