Godzilla 2016 announced: Toho to show us how it's done.
Late Sunday night EST, Toho announced it will be producing a Godzilla movie for a Summer 2016 release in Japan.
TOHO proclaimed, "The time has come to make a film that will not bow down to the Hollywood film," thanks to a combination of rapidly improving filmmaking techniques (as exemplified by the ongoing Parasyte films) and know-how developed over the years in Japan.

Will they make a new Godzilla design or use the 2004 design?
Anyone want a Godzilla VS. Bearzilla (2014) battle?

R.I.P. rubber suits... I knew they were gone forever when they put the series on hiatus in 2004.
Not that Toho is a complete stranger to CG: I think all of the films in the Millennium series (1999-2004) featured at least one shot in which a monster was all-CG, and they did an all-CG Godzilla when he showed up in this movie called Always 2 in 2007:
I expect a new design like always; only on a few occasions did they ever re-use a suit.
We're supposed to get a sequel to the 2014 movie in 2018; it'll be pretty sweet if we have two series going on at the same time, alternating between American and Japanese films.
As for opponents, the 2018 American film is supposed to have Mothra, Ghidorah, and Rodan, so I would avoid those. I'm frankly shocked that they still haven't made a Godzilla vs. Gamera movie. Personally, my dream project would be Godzilla vs. Daimajin.
Actually I think it's a good thing the Japanese are going to be making another Godzilla, they started it, so who better than the originators to make one? Because lets face it, the 2014 Edwards film wasn't very good and it was one big mess, at least the Japanese films have soul in them and passion.
Has for CGI, I don't know, these Rubber suits have been looking good for ever and no CGI will ever replace models and practical effects. And the last Japanese Godzilla film named "Godzilla Final Wars" sucked, bad direction, bad storytelling and the CGI was awful, so if they want to make a good one, go back to the roots, go back to practical.

Well, Gamera was designed as a Godzilla knock-off by a rival studio, wasn't he? Doesn't surprise me that those two streams don't cross.
With the exception of the first film, Gamera is intrinsically a hero, though: "a friend to all children". I'm not a Godzilla expert, but isn't he usually portrayed as a villain? I think a lot of people would be disappointed to see Godzilla be defeated by a jet-propelled turtle and his army of Japanese boys in disturbingly short shorts.
Yeah, and there's been a sort of light rivalry between the two: I know that at least one Gamera movie (Super Monster) took a shot at Godzilla, and at least one Godzilla movie (Final Wars) took a shot at Gamera. Funny thing is, Toho and Daiei were actually working together at one point, with Toho distributing the 1990s Gamera trilogy. It was odd seeing the Toho logo at the beginning of Gamera movies, sort of like seeing Sonic in Mario games.
Godzilla has been portrayed as a hero and a villain and everything in between. In the late 60s and early 70s, he was the defender of the earth against evil monsters, just like Gamera. In Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), he was a flat-out evil villain, with the other monsters portrayed as the heroes. Most of the time, though, Godzilla is simply a force of nature, neither good or evil, simply an animal defending his turf.
Pride may be an issue here... maybe Toho doesn't want Godzilla losing to another company's monster... but that wasn't the case when they made King Kong vs. Godzilla. As for Gamera, the 1990s trilogy retooled him into something more serious, with no annoying little boys in shorts to be seen. Both monsters have been reimagined so many times by their own companies, they can be practically whatever audiences need them to be.
Personally I hope this new Godzilla series rivals the millennial series and the 90s movies.
Final Wars was the only bad millennial movie.
I'd also love Biollante to return from heaven to battle again.
I'm ready to see Godzilla destroy Mothra again!!

If the CGI is good it can go way beyond rubber suits in "realism" for something the size of Godzilla.
CGI may be easy for the director, but certainly not for those who are making it. CGI ask for a lot of effort from the CGI artists and somtime form the lightning director, I don't see why it would be considered more easy that a rubber suit.
Is CGI overused in some movies; yes it is. Still it's not inherently worse or better that pratical effects, it depend on what you want to do.
