Do you have to have the subtitles on when you watch movies?

I've found that I get more out of a movie if I can read the subtitles, even if it's in plain English. Usually, this applies more to movies with lots of plot. I zone out when I listen to the words alone, but I can follow the story when I can see the dialogue on the screen. I don't know why this is. I'm always slightly irked when I get a DVD and there's no English subtitle option.

This applies to video games, too. I just cannot play games like Mass Effect without the subs on.

Anyone else like this?

Yeah, I used to do this all the time! I just couldn't understand what some of the characters were saying in films/series, even though my sense of hearing is better than average. I get slightly irritated if the subtitle is wrong, though. Sometimes it's so clearly different to what's actually being said on-screen that it gets under my skin

Yep. We've had topics before, and again, and again, about DVD subtitles and CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder). It seems to be somewhat common among people with AS. I called it audio dyslexia before I knew anything about it. For me, I can have someone speaking right to my face and I'm making an effort to hear every word, and I still hear gibberish. It can make watching movies and TV incredibly frustrating, and I always turn on the subtitles whenever I'm watching something alone.

Whoops! Sorry for being redundant, then. Good to know I'm not the only one that does this.

I really like having subtitles on, so much that it annoys my family when I watch TV in the living room and they don't know how to turn the CC off.

all the time. i find it hard to understand what people are saying onscreen, even if they don't have heavy accents or the like.
i found that experiencing real life, not just films or tv, seem strangely...off if there's no text to be seen.
text is comforting to me, and for this reason and others i carry a pen wherever i go.

Yeah, I find it much easier to follow. I don't watch films all that much though.
