A whole bunch of the supporting cast is Australian, but the main cast is a mix of English (Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), South African (Charlize Theron), and American (Zoë Kravitz). The closest to a pure Aussie in the main cast is Hugh Keays-Byrne, who had a role in the original Mad Max; he was born in India and moved to Australia at 26.

Perhaps slightly disappointing, but Mel Gibson wasn't a pure Aussie either; he was born in New York and moved to Oz when he was 12. I'm happy with the cast, and I'm certainly happy with who's behind the camera: George Miller, the director of the previous three Mad Max films. The guy's never made a bad movie. I think this trailer looks friggin' amazing, and the consensus I've been reading seems to agree with me.

Just in case anyone reading this hasn't seen the previous films, there's an excellent Blu-ray set that I can recommend. $35 is slightly steep for three movies, but they're really three of the best action films you'll ever see. The metal tin is one of the gems of my Blu-ray collection:

I just hope this film doesn't suffer the dreaded PG-13 virus, like The Expendables 3. I am sick and tired of action movies being rated PG-13, except for comic book movies, with some exceptions to certain character that need R rated movies(Deadpool, Punisher, ect.) Action movies just aren't the same as they were in the 80s and 90s, ironically Stallone wanted to change that with Expendables, but now the third one is PG-13.

Looks like the same basic plot as Road Warrior. Why can't they think of something new?

Believe it or not, Stallone wanted The Expendables to be PG-13 from the very beginning. The first two movies were shot with a PG-13 in mind, and I specifically remember the second one being officially announced as PG-13, but fan outcry over the ratings made him add a bunch of digital blood to the films in order to get an R. This is why the PG-13 doesn't bother me for the third film. I'd rather have a PG-13 movie that was intended to be PG-13 than an R movie that was shot as PG-13 and only became an R after a bunch of awful-looking digital blood was added.

I'm also not too concerned with the rating for Mad Max. It may get an R, since the studio seems to have largely taken a hands-off approach to it so far, but I won't throw a tantrum if it ends up being PG-13. You can get away with a shocking amount of violence in modern PG-13 movies as long as nobody shows a nipple or drops an F-bomb.

Of course, filmmakers should be allowed to simply make the movies they want to make and get whatever rating is coming their way, without any studio interference. If the movie they shot gets a PG-13, so be it. If it gets an R and the studio tells the director to edit the film in order to get a PG-13, then we've got a problem.

Oh God, the first time I saw Mad Max on video years ago, all the Australian actors had been dubbed over with American accented voices, including Mel Gibson (I suppose because that had been before Gibson was well known by American audiences). It's a grim thing to hear a voice not Mel's coming out of his mouth. But hey, maybe he can blame that dubbed over voice for that drunken Antisemitic rant he went on!

I've often wondered, why are americans so averse to hearing foreign accents in movies. Do audiences really care, or is it some kind of effort to maintain american insularity?

I used to have the "American Dub" of Mad Max on DVD... I got it by mistake and absolutely hated it. I think I traded it to Amazon for like, 50 cents worth of credit...

It's been out of print for years. I bet it's worth more than 4 bits to somebody these days...

As to why they dubbed it,

Quote:
Mad Max was dubbed when originally released in the United States, as the distributors felt that the original Australian dialogue was not clear enough to be easily understood. According to Sam Arkoff's biography, Flying Through Hollywood By The Seat Of My Pants, "...the exhibitors would consider anything that isn't 'American English' to be 'limey.' After the first reel, they'd decide not to book the picture".

All of the actors were dubbed, including Mel Gibson, who was still a relatively unknown actor in the U.S. at the time. The dubbed audio track can still be found on various DVD releases, including the MGM special edition listed at the top. The original Image / Orion DVD release (which had the dubbed audio only) is out of print now though, so you might need to try eBay if you really want it.

Mad Max and The Road Warrior are two of my all time favorite movies because of all the amazing stunts in those movies. I like the look of the new movie's trailer, but I hope most of the stunts in the movie are real and not CG.

CG is pretty, but it still can't compare to the real thing.

I actually sort of sympathize with the people at the studio who wanted the original Mad Max dubbed. The accents are far thicker than they are in the sequels, often to the point of being incomprehensible, and there's quite a bit of Australian slang that would have been completely lost on American ears. It's easy enough to understand these days with DVD subtitles and the internet to look things up, but not so much back in 1979.

As for CG, there's obviously some in the new movie. You can see it most clearly in the sandstorm sequences in the trailer, and I'm sure that Charlize Theron's cyborg arm required it as well. But overall it's looking like they went practical whenever they could. This was essentially an independent movie from what I can gather, and they probably couldn't have afforded extensive CG even if they wanted it.

As far as being able to understand the original dialog goes--I think it really depends on how one's ear is calibrated. I just watched Mad Max with the original mono soundtrack (the movie holds up quite well, by the way) and I didn't have any trouble understanding anything. But, I've lived in a lot of places where people speak with very thick accents (heck, I sound like Slim Pickens  ). I could see someone used to hearing "mid-west bland" having trouble with the dialog.

...think I'll go watch The Road Warrior now. :)

I would never have imagined the late Slim Pickens' voice coming out of your mouth.

Same. I find PG-13 action movies tend to be quite boring, and lacking in substance. It's like they want to be "badass", but they prevent themselves from doing so to ensure box office sales. That said, I rather like the James Bond films, and most of those are PG-13, though I swear they manage to slip in all sorts of stuff that would give other films R ratings. Then again, the people behind that series have been evading censors since the 60s, so they've probably got it down to a science by now. ;)
