Actually, it's another planet: LV-223. The original script for
Prometheus was a much more straightforward
Alien prequel. The planet is LV-426, the ship they encounter is the same one from
Alien, and the pilot they encounter is the same one we see fossilized in
Alien. But I guess someone released that it didn't make sense for it to be the same ship and the same pilot, since the pilot had been fossilized a very long time in
Alien, so they changed it. Different planet, different ship, different pilot.
But yes, it's still a prequel and still shows how the xenomorphs were created. The black goo was meant (somehow) to kill humans when it arrived on Earth. David used it to infect Shaw's boyfriend, he had sex with her and implanted her with whatever little worm was seen floating around in his eye, it grew into the white squid that Shaw removed from herself, which then attacked the pilot and implanted a new embryo which emerged from the pilot as a very early version of the xenomorph.
Phew. Confused yet?
