Well, this is sort of like the other questions but I'd also like to know what some of your favorite musicals are. They can musicals or opera of any kind and place. Animated or live action etc. As long as they have been filmed and they have a fair amount singing in them. I'm also interested to see what people have seen. I might post mine later.

I think of myself as someone who does not like musicals and yet there are a number of films that I really like that would be considered musicals.

"Hair" by Milos Foreman
"The Forbidden Zone" by Richard Elfman
"The American Astronaut" by Cory McAbee
"All That Jazz" by Bob Fosse
"Sweeny Todd" and "Company" by Stephen Sondheim
"Lenningrad Cowboys Go America" by Aki Kaurismaki (ok, not really a musical, but still...)
"Alien!" By Ridley Scott
"Topsy Turvy" by Mike Leigh (again, not really a musical, but sorta)
"Oh Lucky Man" (also not a musical, but it has musical interludes)

I don't know anything about Opera. My favourite musicals are:

Chicago was pretty good as well...

I've never understood the appeal of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The music is bad, and I have no idea what the subtext is.

Favorite musical is 'Paint Your Wagon', with 'Fiddler on the Roof' a very close second. As for my favorite opera it takes a lot to beat Bizet's 'The Pearl Fishers'

Now if I could only find a religious text that could be sung to the duet Au fond du temple saint...

Verdi--Rigoletto
Verdi--La traviata
Verdi--Otello
Donizetti--L'Elisir d'Amore (anyone here think that Nemorino may have been an aspie?)
Puccini--La Boheme
Puccini--Madama Butterfly
Puccini--Gianni Schicci
Puccini--Turandot
Poulenc--Dialogues des Carmelites
Kern--Showboat
Gershwin--Porgy and Bess
Rogers and Hammerstein (most of their output)
Bernstein--West Side Story (and it's a b*tch to play, especially when one doesn't play jazz)
Sondheim--A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along

And quite a few more that I don't have time to mention.

VINCERA!! !!

I loved Les Contes d' Hoffmann and Carmen as a child. I was obsessed with them, practically. I developed a fascination with the 18th century, especially clothes, from Hoffmann. Also Gilbert and Sullivan, especially the Pirates of Penzance. There was a movie of it made in the 70s with some guy--Rex something--who was supposed to be some kind of heartthrob, and Linda Ronstadt.

Personally, I prefer Jussi Bjoerling portrayal of Prince Calaf.
