The more I see of the "Duke," the more I am convinced he is quite possible the least masculine male lead in cinematic history. The way he walked, not manly at all. his delivery of his lines, not at all credible. I think very overrated. I think the mans man of cinema was Steve McQueen.

My random and insignificant thought of the day.

It could be the characters he played. As I remember, they were always standing up to danger or threats.

I remember there were always rumors of him being gay, but he walked the same in pretty much every role. I never found him particularly macho.

I never liked him. My interest in westerns began with Leone, and John Wayne's movies looked fake by comparison.

He did quite a few non westerns but always the same pseudo macho type character, as in this show McQ, which I thought to be a copy of Steve McQueen "Bullitt" but John Wayne was no Steve McQueen.

It was awful, plus he was too old and porky to do a role like that. And it was 1974.

This one, IMO is much better, and I may be wrong, but I believe McQueen did his own stunt driving

I think the late William Holden could run circles around Wayne as a western movie star, or as a dramatic actor in general.

Hmm... The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was a damn good movie. I'm not saying John Wayne made it a good movie, but he didn't ruin it either.

Also, The Searchers and The Shootist ain't chopped liver. Just sayin'.

I do concede that was an exceptional movie. Lee Marvin as the villainous Liberty Valance doesn't get the credit he deserves.

I am just saying he was not the quintessential macho man that our culture makes him out to be. I think he was cast in a lot of manly roles because of his size. He did not move, walk, fight or talk, or even handle women in a particularly macho, studly manner He fought like a sissy. He even handled a pistol like a sissy.
