Singer's departure was very last-minute; he actually participated in most of the pre-production stuff, before WB offered him Superman. The idiots at Fox didn't want to invest any more time or money, so they grabbed Ratner and kept going full-steam. I think the film has some good moments, like Bobby fighting Pyro and Kelsey Grammer playing Beast. But so much around it was chaotic, which Singer tried to fix with the ending to "Days of Future Past". Right now, the general idea is that most events from the previous films still happened, just a little differently. For example, writer Simon Kinberg says that Logan has his metal claws in the altered future, but since we saw Mystique save him from the river in 1973, those circumstances were altered.
Singer does such a good job with X Men: First Class and Days Of Future Past. I think his attitude is just to ignore all the plot lines of Last Stand and hope that the audience has forgotten that movie as well. Such a talented film director and artist. Even his Jack the Giant Slayer is a highly underrated movie.
