The thread about docudramas/biopics made me curious about everyone's favorite documentaries....
Here are some of my favourite documentaries:
Winnebago Man
Paradise Lost (1-3)
West of Memphis
Super Size Me
Religulous
Sicko
Manhunt
I liked these a lot, also.
Here are my favourites. My criteria here is that I learned something valuable from them, and enjoyed them enough that I watched them more than once:
Manufacturing Consent- is an invaluable introductory resource for people interested in why the news media is usually far less than objective and impartial; as well as an introduction to the thinking of Noam Chomsky.
The Red Chapel- is about a Danish troupe of comedians, who go to NK to put on a show. The body language of the NK's is particularly interesting. We project a lot of our own assumptions about what they must be thinking, but who is to know if we are right.
The Corporation- anthropomorphises the corporation, and sets out to demonstrate that they are psychopathic.
The Power of Nightmares- explains how our politicians use fear mongering to control the population. Particularly delves into the background of the, "War on Terror" narrative.
Cosmos- No need to explain what this is.
Slavoj Zizek: Perverts Guide to Ideology- explains how ideology functions.
Dark Days- is about New York's subway dwellers.
Crips and Bloods: Made in America- explains the origin and lifestyle of these gangs.
Jean Luc Godard: Sympathy for the Devil- This is my favourite documentary. It makes some interesting observations about the essence and function of phoney mainstream rebellion culture epitomised by the Stones (whose music I like, by the way).
To add a documentary series that is terrible, but I like anyway: Ancient Aliens.
Has anyone been to the "Vice" youtube channel? Their documentaries are outstanding.
