What is your take on the IMDB list on series and movies? Do you agree with the 2 lists?

Series: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?num_vo ... =tv_series
Movies: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?ref_=nv_ch_250_4

The Shawshank Redemption have I never understod how it can be viewed as the best movie ever.
Regarding series, Planet Earth should not be that high, Game Of Thrones should be nr:1

IMDb rankings are based entirely on user votes and thus are almost always unreliable. I remember when 'The Dark Knight' briefly held the #1 spot on the Top 250 before it even came out because so many people were blindly rating it a 10. Thus, I wouldn't get too worked up over any of those lists.

There is only 1 person whose movie opinions I trust: Roger Ebert. A shame he isn't around anymore though.

And I think the thing about Shawshank Redemption is how the relationship amongst the prisoners change over time (ie. they go from hating Andy to keeping him as one of their closest friends).
PS. the scene with Brooks cut deeper than a lot of sad movies could.

While I liked Roger Ebert as a film reviewer he wrote garbage reviews of films such as The Night Porter, showing complete ignorance of the complexity of European film making.
As far as IMDB is concerned, the rating is skewed by Hollywood studios paying people to write glowing reviews. The key to understanding the site is to read all the indivual reviews, because there you find some of the best critical reviews you are likely to read (much better than a lot of the professional reviews by film critics in name only).

My tastes and opinions occasionally clashed with Roger Ebert's (of particular note, his whole tirade against slasher films in the early '80s was incredibly poorly-researched and nonsensical, and he ranked 'Caligula', one of my all-time favorite movies, as one of his absolute worst), but he was a phenomenal writer and had such a way with words that you wanted to keep reading what he had to write even if you disagreed with it. Also, he was a funny, funny guy and I've never met another film critic who had the same kind of humor and charisma he had. I greatly respect him and his writing and I really miss reading his reviews on a regular basis.

I endorse everything you stated about Robert Ebert who I regarded as one of the very best film reviewers in the world. I just wanted to highlight that occasionally he got it very very wrong, but I don't wish to diminish his career.
