It's an anime from 1995. WOW! It's shocking and amazing! I sort of relate to Shinji. I deal with depression off and on and love the ending message of both the series and ending movie. The series idea of love yourself and how you see yourself is how people see you I've never viewed myself through that kind of lens. The movie aspect was asking help me help me and he had to learn to help himself for once something I need to take and apply to my own self vs. Expecting people to help with my Autism perhaps get out there and try to help myself. Very powerful messages that sort of help me see things differently.

I don't like how Shinji never seems to change throughout the whole series of the show or the film ending. He's not some hero that suddenly goes from weak to strong and confident he's upset and depressed throughout the whole series and movie. I'm curious if anyone has seen this anime or relates to any of the characters. I feel bad in the series Asuka went into a catatonic state due to depression but was happy in the film she gained her confidence back and kicked some ass! :-)

What are your thoughts?

It made me see how ridiculous post-modernism is.

I can only watch it in Japanese. Not because I prefer subs to dubs, but because the voice actors in the English version are atrocious (especially Shinji). So I watched Evangelion back in summer and I thought it was pretty decent, but it fell apart near the end. I know that the reason had something to do with the director having major depression, irresponsible budgetary spending and some drama to do with fans being way too involved, but that's only what I've heard.

I thought I was really going to hate Shinji a lot. I mean, don't get me wrong - I really don't like him as a person, but I think as a character he is very interesting due to the fact that he is the absolute worst kind of protagonist, which makes him more human. That doesn't change how frustrating it is when entire episodes are devoted to his pig-headedness.

I think I'll need to watch it again (especially near the end).

I also found the dub online and HATED Shinji's actor and Asukas got me interested to make a Sub/Dub topic. :-) I'm considering watching Cowboy Bebop since I've heard so many good things but am thinking maybe the Sub version of it. I rate NGE to 5 shows overall (In all the shows I've watched not just Anime) IMO it's THAT GOOD!
