I just went to see The Martian, which was an excellent movie. I made the mistake of seeing it in 3D though. 3D has always bothered me. I just thought that it wasn't realistic. It's not how I perceive the world, which usually is a bit flatter. The surreal feeling is most pronounced if there is something close to the screen and something far away--there is an effect called "parallax," in which things that are far away move more slowly than things that are close up. You might notice this if you look out the side window of a car or train. In 3D movies, the parallax just seems wrong, like its moving too much, and the depth is too...deep. It's hard to explain. The effect is very disorienting, giving me a weird, dizzying, unpleasant feeling like I'm staggering drunk and about to get violently ill. I talked to my wife, who enjoyed the movie and didn't see anything surreal about the 3D at all. I never could see the appeal of 3D as a result, but now I'm wondering if most people see it as being realistic.

I am near-sighted and have an astigmatism. Is this because of my eyesight, or because my autistic brain is actually perceiving things differently from an NT brain, and the movie was forcing me to see things the way they do? Does anybody else have this happen? Just curious, I thought it might be interesting.

Unfortunately I can't say much about a lot of things you've described, but I too find 3D movie depth perception unrealistic.

I don't like watching 3D movies. I don't find it realistic, either. It does "pop out" and seem to have volume/depth, but that doesn't make me enjoy it.

I don't know because I never see films in 3D, I always just go to 2D. I'd guess that it still does.

It doesn't "bother" me, but the few times I've tried to watch something in 3D, I really couldn't sense much of a benefit or improvement with the effect despite being able to detect differences. Perhaps due to my SPD issues I'm not as sensitive with the proper perception needed for enjoyment?

I love watching movies in 3D. I love playing computer games with 3D glasses as well. Can't wait for the Oculus Rift.

I only thing I don't like about 3D games or movies is when they're not 3D enough. I mean on a lot of movies they turn down the depth to about 20% to assuage the complainers.

I don't really mind 3D movies, but after seeing the last Hobbit movie, I knew it was time to get new glasses because some of the effects were blurry, even though I had those glasses on over my prescription glasses. Since I got my new glasses, those types of movies are just fine for me as the blurriness is now gone.

i haven't had any problems with the way 3d makes me feel, i feel fine outside of the weight of having had two glasses on my face but it bothers me when 3d is being shoehorned into seemingly every modern movie now, and even more so when there is no 2d option and i'd have to go with bulky glasses over my regular ones.

not all movie is a perfect fit for 3d, and it doesn't seem much more realistic than 2d. i choose to watch in dual dimensions when i can.

My vision in my right eye is poor, so the 3D effect is always lost on me and it hurts my eyes anyway.

Since i almost always see from my periferal vision, those 3D glasses don't even work for me; i must use 2/3s of my vision range to see the cinema screen and the glasses don't even cover 1/3s of what i can see.
result: i look 'past' the glasses, which makes me see half the movie in 3D and half in "double projection".
I can force myself to see the double projection as 3D, but this means adjusting all of my vision, turning the part my glasses cover into double projection again.

The last time i saw a 3D movie, i just kept the glasses off but this ment (obviously) that i had to expend cartloads of concentration energy to see the story; i also got strange looks from those sitting close to me.

Combining the extra monetairy costs for a 3D movie with the discomfort and energy expenses, i just don't go to them anymore.
With the 2D versions at awkward times (if available at all), i just don't go to the movies anymore, i just netflix whatever i want to see

3D bothers me. I start feeling disoriented and uncomfortable when I watch something in 3D, so I avoid it as much as I can. I also don't like 3D because it can be used to milk more money out of movies. Can anyone spell "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 3D"? :P

yeah, netflix...library rentals, online, etc. i have to make increasingly complex excuses for myself to justify going out and paying to go to the cinema, usually telling myself it's at least marginally better than being at home all day.

inside out in 2d was probably the last recent movie theater visit i quite enjoyed.

I loved that movie. One of the 50% of Pixar movies I actually like. Wait, that movie had a 3D version? Now I must buy it on 3D Bluray :D

It doesn't bother me, in fact, I love watching movies in 3D and will do so whenever I get the chance. :)
