I just went to see The Martian, which was an excellent movie. I made the mistake of seeing it in 3D though. 3D has always bothered me. I just thought that it wasn't realistic. It's not how I perceive the world, which usually is a bit flatter. The surreal feeling is most pronounced if there is something close to the screen and something far away--there is an effect called "parallax," in which things that are far away move more slowly than things that are close up. You might notice this if you look out the side window of a car or train. In 3D movies, the parallax just seems wrong, like its moving too much, and the depth is too...deep. It's hard to explain. The effect is very disorienting, giving me a weird, dizzying, unpleasant feeling like I'm staggering drunk and about to get violently ill. I talked to my wife, who enjoyed the movie and didn't see anything surreal about the 3D at all. I never could see the appeal of 3D as a result, but now I'm wondering if most people see it as being realistic.
I am near-sighted and have an astigmatism. Is this because of my eyesight, or because my autistic brain is actually perceiving things differently from an NT brain, and the movie was forcing me to see things the way they do? Does anybody else have this happen? Just curious, I thought it might be interesting.
