Do I have the right to like the Lord of the Rings Movies?
This may sound like a silly question but hear me out. I love the Peter Jackson's LOTR, despite the fact that I have never read the books and I also like the Hobbit Trilogy, not as much as LOTR but certainly much better than the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Here's why I asked the question. LOTR is of course a fantasy and from that I get the idea that people might think I'm into fantasy. Well there are some movies in that genre I do enjoy, the How To Train Your Dragon Movies and even the TV Series attached to it. I also like the Harry Potter movies, though I'm not really a big hardcore fan. Heck you could even conSider a majority of the Disney Movies to be fantasies. Well while Lord of the Rings might be considered the greatest movie fantasy, on TV that honor would go to Game of Thrones which is said to be one of the best tv shows of all time. Now I didn't watch this show when it first aired. Somewhere during the years it aired I discovered it existed and last December Sky Atlantic aired every episode before the 5th season I think it was. Anyway I decieded to tape it on my Sky Planner and I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes and while it did have some interesting characters and I guess some interesting stuff? I mean it was mostly politics and no fantasy and I don't give a rats arse about politics. You probably won't catch me watching the Kevin Spacey show, I was kinda turned off by it, mostly because of the sex and nudity. Now I don't mind sex and nudity in film and on tv but not the way they're doing it. Rape, Incest, Homoerotism. Not that I hate gay people by the way, they have their rights aand all but I feel uncomfortable watching two guys doing something two girls would do in a porn video and that's probably not fair to say because there are women who probably watch this and are uncomfortable with girl on girl action. I know that's not the majority or focus of the show as it is the story and characters but it kinda weirds me out a little and it is distracting which is why I stopped watching which is ashame because it's suppose to have some fantasies stuff I like dragons. Not that I'm a huge dragon fan but as I said before I love the HTTYD movies and I especially love Smaug. A part of me is willing to give it another try if I have the guts but to be fair I could probably live without it. But I feel like if I choose not to watch a fantasy epic like GOTS then why do I choose to watch another like LOTR and even all the at times child friendly stuff like HP and HTTYD. GRanted they have they're darker mature moments, but I guess i only like fantasy if it's not too extreme. I feel like people might judge me for not likING GOTS and liking LOTR. But if I choose not to watch GOTS just because it's too extreme shouldn't that be my choice, my opinion? I don't have to like everything that is considered good or hate everything that's considered bad. That doesnt make me unintelligent.
You have the right to like whatever you want, I don't think anyone would judge you for not being a fan of Game of Thrones. I am in the same boat as you, I got through a season and a bit before I just couldn't put up with the ridiculous amounts of violence and rape any more. I don't think we are the only ones either, I know a few fantasy/sci-fi fans who were put off by Game of Thrones for the same reason. I think the general idea of Game of Thrones that they are going for is to have a fantasy that is extremely realistic and appeals to people who are not necessarily fantasy fans, as opposed to more mainstream fantasy which is highly stylised such as HP and LOTR.
