I expected that the new Ben-Hur wouldn't stand well to the 1959 movie, from the trailer it seem way worse that I anticipated.

The way they make these sorts of trailers these days leaves a lot to be desired. The editing is unpleasant. The sound effects cliche and were annoying to begin with. The ones in this trailer don't even fit the kind of movie this is. Why would they make trailers that are aesthetically unpleasant to watch?

I see Jeor Mormont is in this. I assume he is going to play Quintius Arrius. That's a piece of good casting. But, If someone removed the titles, and told me that this was the fourth season of Spartacus Blood and Sand, I would have believed them. I liked that show, but I think a Ben Hur film should aim for something grander and less digital, less tacky with less bad acting, considering the first two were major milestones in epic film making and are known for authentic-seeming production values.

From the scenes in the trailer, it looks like the chariot race is more or less going to duplicate the 59 version. Morgan Freeman looks like he's reprising his character from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Digital elements look unrealistic, like videogame cutscenes. A shame, because I like sword-and-sandal epic's, and would have paid to see this on the big screen, if it looked good. I can't complain too much, since we've just had the Revenant, and there is a Martin Scorcese period film starring Liam Neeson on the horizon. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0490215/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

I have a strange feeling that this version of Ben-Hur will flop when it is released in August.
