Battlestar Galactica is making a fracking art form out of the Cliffhanger!
***SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT***
***IF YOU HAVE NOT YET WATCHED THE LAST EPISODE OF SEASON 3, AND INTEND TO, READ NO FURTHER!! !***
***YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!***
First season: They've just opened the way to Kobol, by blowing up a Cylon Baseship. Sharon has had confirmation she's a Cylon. Lee and the President are in irons. Sharon's returned from the mission to plant the nuke on the Baseship, Commander Adama's congratulating her - and she pulls out her pistol and shoots him twice. He's bleeding out all over the CIC plotting table, Lee's fighting the get free of his guards and go to his father, Tigh has just beaten Sharon down - TO BE CONTINUED.
Season 2.0: Admiral Cain, aboard Pegasus, is about to execute Helo and the Chief, because they accidentally killed her XO and chief torturer just as he was about to rape another Sharon (the one who'd broken her programming, and with whom Helo had fallen in love). Adama has announced he's getting his men back. Both ships have launched fighters, which are streaking toward one another - TO BE CONTINUED.
Season 2.5: They've finally held the election - the one that was supposed to be held seven months after the Exodus from the Colonies. Dr. Baltar, running on a campaign of colonizing the (barely) habitable planet they've accidentally discovered inside a nearby energetic nebula (supposed to be undetectable by the Cylons because of the energy flux), manages to defeat Pres. Roslin. After he's sworn in, he starts looking over the paperwork, then lays his head on his desk. We dolly in to the top of his head, then pull back as the screen reads, ONE YEAR LATER. (Which is why many fans refer to it as "The Year In Baltar's Hair".) Outside, we see the colony is still mostly living in tents, barely surviving - when the Cylons fly in. A group march into the President's office, announcing that they're there to take care of the humans - whether the humans want it or not. President Baltar formally surrenders. Last scene - a phalanx of Cylon Centurions marching down the main street of New Caprica. TO BE CONTINUED.
Season 3: Kara Thrace is dead, blown up in a gas giant's atmosphere two episodes ago. Tigh and Kara's ex, Sam Anders, have been hearing mysterious music no one else can. Now, Chief Tyrol can hear it too, as can Pres. Roslin's aide, Tory Foster (who has also been carrying on with Sam). They all find themselves drawn to Galactica's gym, where they hear the music clearly for the first time (All Along the Watchtower, by Bob Dylan, arranged by Bear McCreary), and realize - they're Cylons, members of the mysterious Cylon offshoot known as the Final Five. Meanwhile, Baltar, having been acquitted on charges of treason for his surrender of New Caprica, finds himself in the corridors of the Galactica, with no clear destination in mind, when he's abducted by a group of women who seem to think he's God. Next, as the Fleet arrives in the Ionian Nebula, a Cylon fleet appears, too. Galactica launches fighters, including the Viper flown by Lee Adama (who formally resigned his commission last episode, but won't let a little detail like that stop him now). Lee peels off to investigate a bogey at the edge of DRADIS range - and finds a shiny new Mk II Viper. Its pilot - Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, who Lee had watched die. She calmly announces she knows where Earth is, and she's been there.
"BATTLESTAR GALACTICA WILL BE CONTINUED IN 2008."
I don't think I've really stopped screaming at this yet...
