Galaxy Class was a failure

I see the Galaxy Class of Star Trek as Star Fleets attempt to build a super starship. No mere heavy cruiser like its Ambassador class predecessor, this would be a ship capable of anything. What they got was an over designed monstrosity with a tendency to explode, and requiring huge and plucky crews to handle them.

The ships Starfleet built after it, the Soverign, Akira, Saber, and Streamrunner classes, were military vessels in all but name, because of the threats posed by the Dominion and the Borg.
