People want Tommy from Power Rangers to be woman?

With rumors of a sequel to the 2017 Power Rangers, though it seems unlikely due to the film not making enough money at the box office there has actually been talk of making Tommy, arguably the most popular Power Ranger of all time a woman. Well I just have one question, Why? I know in media today they wanna be more diverse and all and there's nothing wrong with that but to do it at the risk of changing an iconic character. This isn't like turning the Ancient One from Doctor Strange who was an old Chinese man in the comic books into a Caucasian Woman in the movie or Turning Hogarth from Jessica Jones who was a man in the comics into a lesbian woman in the tv show, those characters were never popular at all, who care what they did to them. But Tommy from Power Rangers? I know they made Billy black and Trini a lesbian but to be fair they don't bother me too much. Not to insult the late Thuy Trang who played Trini on the show but I always found her to be the blandest of the group. The only one to be more blander than her was her crush Richie. To make her a lesbian is an interesting trait. But Tommy is arguably more popular. The problem with making people in media more diverse whether is race, religion, gender, LGBT etc is that it can lead to major change to existing source materials. There is nothing wrong with diversity of course but source material should be mad enough important too. Someone once suggested that Tommy could be transgender and while I don't have anything against anything LGBT related I don't really want that to happen. They probably would want Transgender Tommy to hook up with Trini and they probably want to connect to that kind of audience and while there is absolutely nothing wrong with that it does kinda ruin the allusion of source material. Give Trini a girlfriend, fine or don't give her one and still make her gay. I mean I don't know if they would explore Billy and Zack's sexualities if they make future sequels. I know they sorta made Jason and Kimberly a couple but hey Tommy could come in a start a love triangle.
