Opinions on Will Smith
I wonder if Daphne Maxwell Reid is doing fine.
I have a feeling that Janet Hubert might have a point: Will Smith might very well be an egomaniac. Albeit in a subtle way. As much as he seems appealing and fun to hang around when I pressure myself to look at things objectively at how he *nearly* has always had a leading if not 'fun deuteragonist' role from the time his sitcom was winding down and he was in 'Bad boys' up until the uncanny non-presence he had in movies for years after a movie where he takes his own life, no less (Seven pounds)..
'After Earth' had a mixed reception and it was arguably as much another springboard for his son as it was an attempt by him to 'draw in the box office', 'Bright' was a mainly failed experiment at urban fantasy which is apparently getting a sequel* and he's going to be playing a live action version of a character Robin Williams gave a beloved spin on and which debatably could be played similarly if 'the Rock' was chosen. 'Spies in disguise' might actually him trying to be more 'low key' in a generic seeming animated movie/ his way of 'switching to a lower gear' but it's trying to capitalize with another 'Bad boys' movie while Martin Lawrence has legitimately seemed to have taken to being 'on bench' these years gets my attention.
"Where the day takes you" and "Six degrees of separation"--early 90's movies I might actually feel like watching one day which are a bit problematic in their depiction of minority groups but nice examples of his scant pre-'Bad boy' movie acting. 'Ali' suited him in how he played a boxer who irl was 'meaningful hammy'. 'On the spectrum' ppl can fantasize about 'I am legend' scenarios and what you would do if stark, major depopulation was actually a thing and I haven't seen 'Concussion' but would hope it's meaningful.
I remember once hearing about him doing a movie called ~'The last pharaoh' were he would play a historical Nubian (modern day Sudan region) who ruled Egypt but a big historical movie about a not-too-famous historical phase would seem like a stretch even for him**.
With 'Spies in disguise' I can understand if it's indicative of him trying to slowly 'rest on his laurels' while his other family members remaining more active as celebrities. 'Spies in disguise' and his Youtube channel.
The fact that the non-monogamy that him and Jada Pinkett practice along with Janet Hubert's resentment being the only 'iffy' things about him...heck, could it be possible that he will go down in history as a beloved celebrity as relatively 'clean' as Donny Osmond?. I would like to think he could be active ~20 years and not have any Bill Cosby level fiasco derail him, speaking as someone who enjoyed 'The fresh prince' stuff when he was younger.
*I've heard that Orlando Bloom might do a similar law enforcement agent agent/ detective and mythical being/fairy team up movie and the fact that it'll be in *Victorian England* might make the idea seem 'less goofy'.
**Making not too famous historical phases popular can happen though: the 'A bride story' manga comes to my mind.
Will Smith, if you're reading this, I have the perfect role for you. You play a detective who has died and went to heaven where you are asked to investigate the heavenly death, a never-happened-before-occurrence, of Amy Winehouse. The book is called "Murder in Rock & Roll Heaven." Script available upon request.
