I was touched by the storyline of the movie "Extinction." I don't want to spoil anything about it for anyone. All I want to say is that I think we could avoid a lot of trouble if we treated all conscious beings with kindness or respect (at least).

As a kid I tried to have consideration for my toys so that none would feel left out or unloved. I bonded more with them than I did with people. It was only recently that I discovered that this is not uncommon for autistic kids.

While my toys weren't conscious, it seems like animals are. And AI will be. Perhaps now is the time to practice saying "thank you" to Siri, Alexa, etc.

I haven't seen (or heard of) Extinction, so I know nothing about that.

But I have always seen that animals have personalities and feelings. (And now, little by little, research is slowly starting to see that too. It's so strange to me that it has taken so long for people to start realize something so glaringly obvious)

...or at least, people are very, very good at motivated ignorance. A surprising number of mid-20th century biologists believed that animals don't "really" feel pain or have emotions. Apparently, pain and emotions miraculously sprang into being the moment we became humans, or something? Anyhow, regarding animals as fleshy "machines" with programmed reflexes and no inner experience neatly sidestepped the need to worry about experimental ethics.
