I recently finished NGE, as the first animé ever that I watch from the beginning to the end.
And I must say I was a bit surprised at first, but I don't think it was a bad ending in any way, just that it was nothing like what I had expected.
But what I want to ask you other people about is this: I think the ending episode is clearly a description of a theory of mind, possibly in a way that is supposed to touch the hearts of ASD people. (Either because of new insight or as a reminder of the struggle) This also makes sense to me since AFAIK many animé fans are on the spectrum.
So what do you think about the theory?

Well, remember that the last two episodes are an alternative ending, or at least an alternative version, where Shinji is within Instrumentality. Most fans were pissed off by the weird ending, and some even gave Hideaki Anno death threats. So the movie length End of Evangelion was made to be a little less ambiguous. There's still weird s**t going on, but it is more understandable in plot terms. End of Evangelion was what the last two episodes COULD have been, if there was enough time and money. However, scenes in those episodes preview those in End, like shots of a dead Misato and Ritsuko.

A little clarification, my theory is based on the last episode in the non-alternative version, the one that's more weird, IMO, and ends with congratulations.
I didn't watch the alt. ending until today, iow I hadn't seen it when I made that post.
And no, I have yet to see the movie.

the 2 Evangelion movies are kinda a waste of time in me eye, since death and rebirth is a rehash of episodes reanimated plus the opening of End Of Evangelion, and End Of Evangelion was Anno-San's up yours to all the death threats he got for ending the Series the way he did

I personally didn't like "The End of Eva" all that much. Yes, there was an actual conclusion to the story as was told up through episodes 1 - 24 of the series, but it was actually just as psychological and just as philosophical as episodes 25 and 26, although not in the same ways. And it left just too much open to interpretation and a few too many loose end hanging for my tastes. I just found it a little too depressing, if you know what I mean. The original final two episodes were terrible, I agree, until the very end of the last episode. That very ending there, in my opinions, especially for the character of Shinji, is simply as good as it gets.

I looked at it as a "cop-out" ending. I despise those types of endings. It just feels like to me the makers made the show so complex and fargone that they couldn't end it in a satisfactory way except to say it was all in his head. It was pretty disappointing after investing the time to make myself go watch it to see why so many anime fans consider it the greatest thing ever.

The movie ending was more meaningful... but it wasn't that much better to me. At least I can think of it as an ending.

The ending just weirded me out. All of humanity gets dissolved into a massive lake of orange goo, leaving Shinji and the German chick whose name I forget as the last two humans left in human form?

Eh? What the hell was that all about? :?
