yes folks, this is video and audio from a special phonograph recording with lo-vision [reduced framerate/bandwidth/AM video and monophonic telephonic quality audio] on it. 8 frames per second and monochrome. but it works! this is like a VERY reductive version of the old RCA capacitive "selectavision" disc-based video recordings. the difference is the bandwidth, the RCA discs had full NTSC bandwidth of about 4 Mhz but this device works within a bandwidth of 25 Khz, many orders of magnitude less.

I was a hi-fi nut from 70s to 90s. Totally vinyl and valve amps… none of that digital weirdness. I seem to remember (probably 70s) they were trying to develop video on analogue discs, they were gold discs I think. But my memory may not be what it was.

I applaud old tech. I live in the very epicentre of Ludditism. Enoch Taylor is buried in my village… google him.

Edit… there seem to be a few Enoch Taylors (who’d have thought?) try Enoch Taylor, Marsden.

Didn't watch the video yet, but isn't this what they used when they launched the voyager probe? A golden vinyl record with both sounds and images into space in the 1970s for aliens to view?

the voyager gold disc uses something similar to the above-linked phonographic disc using audio waveform bursts [presumably up to about 25Khz which is the limit of practical phonographic resolution] to encode video information, only it was much higher resolution, and a correction, it did not use capacitance to encode the signal-

^So if the Voyager gold disc of the 70s had higher resolution video, why did this late 90s vinyl video have such poorer quality? I'd imagine to be able to fit MORE video on one disc, if even at a poorer reolution.

i'm guessing it was a sort of kludge, a more haphazard assemblage of pieces and techniques which later were used in the fisher-price pixelvision camera. i have one of those and can tell you that it looks much the same as the phono-based video. the voyager disc was state of the art, encoded using professional equipment designed bespoke. the difference also was in content, the voyager disc had very little video on it, mostly [27,000] medium-rez still photos. each one took about 12 seconds to load using appropriate playback equipment. these phonodiscs of this thread, however, had real live video even if low-rez.

This is the coolest thing I've seen since the Fischer Price Pixel Camera that recorded video on audio cassettes. It was suppose to be for kids, but it also appealed to artists, and it greatly appealed to me. The low resolution, black and white, 15 frames per second "short comings" did not bother me. There were short comings with the zoetrope, but as media goes, it is still interesting working within the confines.

My first thought is "I want one!" just like when I was in my twenties and I saw the Fischer Price Pixel Camera. But I'm not in my twenties and what stops me now is there is no way for me to independently make my own vinyl content. Very possibly the price would stop me as well. It is still very exciting.

Looked up the price and it is $2000 (USD). Yep, out of my price range.

I didn't buy a Fischer Price Pixel Camera either.

I just read that you (auntblabby) have a Fischer Price Pixel Camera. Am I jealous? Maybe a wee bit.

Didn't RCA spend years developing a vinyl video disc as well? (Oh, you mentioned it. )

It's one of many YouTube channels I watch. Love this vintage stuff.

bought mine in the '90s at ToysRus for $79.99+tax. i watched it steadily appreciate in value. it was an investment, one of the few i knew would certainly appreciate in value. but i prolly have many things that i can be envious of you about, like if you were one of the smart ones who bought google IPO or amazon IPO.
