Simple, it's in Oregon where Matt Groening grew up. His address was 742 Evergreen Terrice.
I know this because I'm a huge Matt Groening fan. Plus I own 5 Life in Hell books.

Although, in the Simpsons Movie Ned apparently tells Bart that the four states that border Springfield are Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky...

In one of the Simpsons episodes the state flag was displayed. It had a beaver (the animal-get your minds out of the gutter) on it. Oregon is the only state with such a flag.

Plus-Flanders, Quimby, Simpson and Lovejoy are all streets in Portland, Oregon.

Lastly, "Shelbyville" is probably Eugene, Oregon.

Why split hairs. Let's say that it's all of the Springfields combined. Because it seems there are elements from different locations near it.
