I think that France probably has the world's best movie industry. Followed by South Korea, and then maybe India.

Anyway, here are French movies that I've watched and recommend. Do you have any others?

Marius (1930) -- Fanny (1931) -- César (1936) (they're a trilogy)

Ali Baba et les 40 voleurs (1954)

Les Tribulations d’un Chinois en Chine (1965)

Le Sauveur (1971)

Le Grand Blond Avec Une Chaussure Noire (1972)

Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob (1973)

Calmos (1976)

Je t'aime moi non plus (1976)

La Cage aux Folles (1978)

La Chèvre (1981)

Les compères (1983)

À gauche en sortant de l'ascenseur (1988)

Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)

La Belle Noiseuse (1991)

L'amant / The Lover (1992)

Germinal (1993)

Les Visiteurs (1993)

Le Jaguar (1996)

Le Dîner des Cons (1998)

Intouchables (2011)

Fanfan la Tulipe (2003)

Le Divorce (2003)

Je vous trouve très beau (2005)

Joyeux Noel (2005)

La Doublure (2006)

Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (2008)

L’Apollonide (Souvenirs de la maison close) (2011)

Un moment d’égarement (2015)

Gauguin - Voyage de Tahiti (2017)

If you enjoy girl-on-girl action, you can look up Blue is the Warmest Color. I do enjoy girl-on-girl action, but I thought it was overdone. You might need multiple tissues to get through it.

I saw Femmes Fatales, aka Calmos, 40+ years ago and still remember it fondly.

I really love La Cage au Folles, great idea for a film.

I also like:

Romauld et Juliette- a CEO falls in love with the office cleaning lady.

Le Placard- a man pretends to be gay to prevent being fired by his employer.

Trois Couleurs- Blue, White and Red (3 films) Based on liberty, equality and fraternity (the motto of the French Republic) I enjoyed White best.

La Gloire de Mon Père and Le Château de Ma Mère. Autobiographical films by the director Marcel Pagnol. Can't remember what happened, I think it's from when he was young to adult, but I enjoyed them.

Do you also like Spanish films? I know LOTS of those. Spain also has a great film industry.

I haven't watched any French films for ages, but one I saw several times is La Provinciale, aka The Girl From Lorraine, starring Nathalie Baye and Bruno Ganz (1980).

Another one I found quite interesting was La Dentelliere or The Lacemaker with Isabelle Huppert from 1978.

I've just bought a boxset of films directed by Eric Rohmer, who made some very watchable, thought provoking stuff.

I wouldn't recommend anything from the Art House genre, or films directed by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, but that's probably just my personal taste.

Jean de Florette
Manon de la Source

Those two go together

Pour Elle
La Femme Nikita

The two above have English version which are much inferior to the French originals.

Un Homme et une Femme - I can still hear the theme song.

The old films of Francois Truffaut.

I think I've only watched 2 French language films and they were dark & nasty so I don't know if I would recommend them to anyone. They were La Haine and Man Bites Dog.

I like Amélie a lot. The music is really good. I play some of the piano pieces.

I've never seen Amelie or know how to pronounce it but I see a picture of her daily as it's the avatar of 'FitGirl' a game repacker.
