I wonder why they didn't just add a ball in digitally after they filmed it? They had to know that someone would slow it down and notice.

Maybe he was afraid that if he touched the leather on a real baseball he might absorb some of the thetans from the dead cow. Then he'd have to go through the auditing sessions all over again. It's not worth the risk.
