Read it, don't rate it highly. Far too extreme for it to be realistic, and the main protagonist seems more Classic autistic at times than AS.

Yeah I don't relate to the kid as having AS, but thought the book was OK as a book. Others like it.

Its been the subject of other topics - look under general autism discussion.

btw - welcome to WP.

I read before I heard of AS. Seemed like an interesting idea to make a main character like that, he seemed full-blown autistic though.

Asperger's?

I thought he was HFA, at best.

He seems to be MUCH lower functioning than most of the people on this forum.

I liked it. I thought it was pretty realistic and accurate, but for one factor - he had /every/ possible symptom, and all in spades. I'm not sure where/hjow Mark Haddon got his material.

Speed of Dark (Elizabeth Moon)? I quite liked that. She has an AS son.

I liked it. And yes, he has HFA, not AS. It doesn't say he has AS anywhere.

It does on the back of the paperback version here in the Uk. It says he has Aspergers.

Mmm... It does on my copy too. But to be fair, it is usually the publisher - not the author - who write those blurbs. And especially first time authors (as Mark Haddon appears to be) have little control over cover design.

I also think that this character is more classic autistic than AS. But on the other hand -- being different from people on this forum doesn't make him unbelievable.

An unputdownable book.

Read it, and it was so good, it took me 3 days to read.

I liked it. A great book.

The author's bringing out a new book. Forgot what it's called now.
