I'v heard that "Torchwood" is the new and improved "X-Files", is that true?
Should I break down and buy the season on DVD?
Hard to believe it could be as good as the X-Files but if it is, I want to give it a chance. And I am currently "smitten with the Brits" so that could have some bearing on my decision also. :D Any one have an opinion as to if it's worth purchasing and watching? Please advise.

I really enjoy Torchwood so I would say yes.

There are some interesting plotlines in this series.

It's based on Doctor Who apparently... and "Torchwood" is actually an anagram of "Doctor Who".

It's based on Doctor Who in the fact that one of the main characters Captain Jack Harkness first appeared on "Doctor Who" as one of (initially) the Ninth Doctor's companions late in the sole season of the Ninth Doctor. The Torchwood Institute itself was founded by Queen Victoria after an encounter with the Doctor. It's a little darker and more adult than "Doctor Who" (there's alot of motifs like bisexuality floating around). It's more or less a really Welsh version of the "X-Files" with a heavy influence of the newer "Doctor Who" episodes.

The first season has its weak points ("Cyberwoman", for instance), but it does introduce us to the characters, and I liked it overall. Tosh has the worst luck with potential mates, though... :) The second season (or "series", if you're a stickler for BBC terminology) is improved, IMO, possibly because the writers are trying to allow for the time that the team spent without Jack while he was gallivanting around with the Doctor in the concluding episodes of the most recent series of "Doctor Who" (well, I'm given to understand that Series 4 has started in Britain already, but we won't see it here until April 21st, apparently - the same day Sci-Fi brings us the other spinoff, "The Sarah Jane Adventures").

Waitwaitwaitwait, Sci-Fi bought the rights to "The Sarah Jane Adventures"...isn't that a kids show? (I guess they needed to make a kids show to balance the fact that "Torchwood" is pretty adult)

New and improved X-Files???? Who the hell said that?

I'm no fan of Torchwood, but I'm pretty sure that X-Files is very little like this show, let alone a 'new and improved' version.

It was mentioned on the BBC America channel somewhere, commerical? interview? don't recall the exact person who said it.
But see the commericals for it all the time and after that comment it made me wonder if its REALLY good.
I own every season of The X-Files, and wanted to know if it was worth the investment. I'd like to start at the beginning w/ Season 1 and just wanted to know what others thought of it.

First up, let me say that I absolutely hated the X files from the very beginning. Talk about derivative, I could always pick the movies it was stolen from in the first 5 minutes of the show before changing the channel.

Torchood is pure Doctor Who, with that Quirky British feel and the whole Dr Who universe to explore.

It's great but watch it on DVD without any adverts in it.

I dunno, I think it's hilarious what the BBCA programmers think would be good to advertise during Torchwood - a lot of ads for Christian CDs, for instance. My very favorite was from the second-series episode where Rhys was in the Hub, chewing Jack out, and Jack paused and said, "Well, this is quite homoerotic." Sudden cut to Chuck Norris for the Total Gym System...

BTW, I'd like to correct the date I gave earlier. The premieres of Doctor Who series 4 and Sarah Jane Adventures will be on the 18th, not the 21st. My bad!

Oh, one other thing - don't try to make sense of Jack's personal timeline. It's doubled back on itself too many times, and as the Doctor himself advised us in "Blink", time isn't always a straightforward progression from cause to effect - it's really sort of a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey ... stuff.

The only episodes I've watched... well the first one I walked in while two girls were making out (which made me happy), and the second time I walked in as two guys were making out (which made me just as happier). So I'd approve of it in my own, odd way. XD

If you want to try it without buying it, there's probably some repeats still lurking around on iplayer. I'm pretty sure there's at least one episode up on there at the moment.

Yeah, I can get the occasional kick from Dr. Who, but I can't stand Torchwood.

Definately not the X Files - does even pretend to that level of sophistication.
