After considering the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, I went back and had a look back at the previous movies by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher. While Tim Burton's takes on the franchise were good, I have to say that Batman Forever, despite its shortcomings, had very dark elements, such as the subplot about Bruce Wayne's father's diary, and the fact that Edward Nygma had a VERY scary obsession with Bruce Wayne.

This poll basically is about the 2 movies directed by Burton, the 2 movies directed by Schumacher, and the currently released Batman Begins. I am not including the movie serial version from the '40's, or the one based on the '60's show.

I have to say that, while Batman Begins is the best way to restart the series, my actual favourite film was Batman Returns. Batman Begins would come second, Batman third, Batman Forever fourth.

The '89 movie was the best.

That really sucks. It *should* be an option.

I liked the one with the bat anti-shark repellent and the amazingly well disguised catwoman - a reporter named kitka - "My name is Kitayna Ireyna Tatanya Kerenska Alisoff. I work for the Moscow Bugle."

oh and those cute little piles of dehyrated people

and the amazing dialogue....

Vice Admiral Fangschliester: Your tone sounds rather grim. We haven't done anything foolish, have we?
Batman: Disposing a pre-atomic submarines to persons who don't even leave their full addresses... Good day, Admiral!

----

Commissioner Gordon: It could be any one of them... But which one? Which ones?
Batman: Pretty *fishy* what happened to me on that ladder...
Commissioner Gordon: You mean where there's a fish there could be a penguin?
Robin: But wait! It happened at sea... Sea. C for Catwoman!
Batman: Yet, an exploding shark *was* pulling my leg...
Commissioner Gordon: The Joker!
Chief O'Hara: All adds up to a sinister riddle... Riddle-R. Riddler!
Commissioner Gordon: A thought strikes me... So dreadful I scarcely dare give it utterance...
Batman: The four of them... Their forces combined...
Robin: Holy nightmare!

-----

Batman: Who knows, Robin? This strange mixing of minds may be the greatest single service ever performed for humanity! Let's go, but, inconspicuously, through the window. We'll use our Batropes. Our job is finished.

How could anything compete with that?

Batman is meant to be taken seriously, you know. I know he's a vigilante in a bat-costume, but with someone as damaged as Bruce Wayne is, you'd think that it'd be dark. In fact, Christopher Nolan's version is a very real Batman, a balance between technology and darkness.

So, no, I am not adding the option of Adam West. Ask again, and I will perforate you with a Batarang faster than you can say "holy perforated peritoneum!" Savvy?

I really liked the Burton ones. Batman Begins was good, too - it made it seem more "realistic".

For an interesting look at the tenuous relation between the camp and serious Batman, check this book out:

Actually, I prefer Mask of the Phantasm and Return Of The Joker personally.

I *demand* the '66 version be put up.

Sure, Heath Ledger might be pretty sassy as the Joker, but does he have a painted over moustache? 8)

Batman Begins. At least you get some sort of idea as to how Bruce creates The Batman. Not every orphan who sees their parents gunned down automatically becomes a perfect crime fighter. The years of martial art and detective training did not just happen. Burton was good, but at the end of the day, it was still a Burton film, and Returns just got silly. Do not get me wrong, I like Burton films, but I feel he was the wrong one for Batman. The other two, well, best left alone. Bat nipples for goodness sake. And Arnie.

Oh, and for a real slap to the face, Jack Nicholson was a terrible Joker. He just played a slightly malevolent man with a weak sense of humour. Joker is a psychopath, who happens to think that what he does is laughable. Not just useless giglling. Heath Ledger has better be good, that is all I can say.

Best Joker until I see Dark Knight? Mark Hamill in BTAS. Just watch Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, the line

"Hello, Gotham. Joker's back in town!" is perfect.

I will get some backlash, but I care not, for I am right.

I was looking forward to "begins" but was very very bored with it.

Nothing on the Tim Burton films.

Of course, they're nothing on Mask of the Phantasm

I'm not counting the animated series 'films' either, but more at my discretion. Nothing really wrong with it.

Why are they films with quotation marks? Does anything animated not count as a film these days? Did I miss a meeting?

Mark Hamill is the greatest Joker ever.

Beacause they are derived from the TV series, the animated one, and are direct-to-DVD. Look, I'm exercising a judgement call here. You don't like it, you're more than welcome to make your own poll, I won't stop you.
