1984 is the original, great movie (very good actors)
equilibrium is fun too (I liked it a lot), but it is more an action movie, unlike 1984 were you really get the idea of a totalitarian government.
But have you seen Brazil (by Terry Gilliam), thats a great movie too about a government in total control of societe (its more a visual and fantastic movie)?
True, 1984 is a very different film/book, but just in terms of story countless sci-fis have had achingly similar "totalitarian government" type plotlines, and "Equillibrium" just didn't have enough original plot ideas in there to make the story interesting to me. If the story had been REALLY well told that wouldn't have mattered, but I didn't like the way the story was told. If the only really original idea you have in there is martial arts with guns, then you could at least focus on having nonstop kickass action sequences...but the slow pace and shaky camera botched that, too.
I have not yet seen "Brazil," but I intend to...I love Terry Gilliam movies.
Anyway, all that said, I'm glad everyone else likes the movie--better to enjoy a film than to find it a waste of time. XD
