I was channel-surfing a month ago when I came across this strange TV series: A man, who doesn't know who he is, but knows every trivial fact recorded anywhere in the world, and has type-4 colour blindness (black and white), but can see some specific people in colour - people who hold the key to his identity and intellectual powers. The TV series is about his journey to find these people. The main character (john doe) is played by Dominic Purcell.

Oh yes, i've seen this show.

He is so lucky to just wake up and know everything...I wish I could do that!

In 'the wire' the term 'John Doe' is used by the baltimore homicide dept. to refer an unidentified body.

That term is used for the same reason here in NZ and for a variety of other reasons including unidentified bodies, unidentified people at hospitals who have serious injuries so can't remember/can't tell anyone their name and sometimes for people who are speaking about something but don't want their identity to be revealed...usually to do with politics or crime investigations.
