Do you like silent movies? What is your favourite movie and star from that epoch? I like Mary Pickford a lot.

I like German films from 1910-1929. My favorite from that era is "Der Müde Tod" which I think is called "Destiny" or "The Weary Death" in English. It's the first film to use episodes as part of the storytelling technique.

I also really like "Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari" (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) because of its brilliant use of expressionism in the sets and clothing.

I could list off tons of early German films that are worth watching, but those are the 2 best imo.

I love silent movies, & I've decided i'm going to make a big effort to watch alot more. I love Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, & all those expressionist movies. I watched The Man Who Laughs yesterday, with Conrad Veidt playing a man disfigured by gipsies who cut his cheeks open so that he always looks like he's smiling. It's very good, people usually know of it because Bob Kane based the look of the Joker on Conrad Veidt's character.
I really want to see everything Lon Chaney jr. is in.

I haven't seen this, I will put it on my list.

all of the chaplin silent films and metropolis.

my favorite chaplins are the circus and city lights. i wish more people would watch silent movies so they could appreciate the beauty of simplicity.

i need to watch more silents, especially keaton.

Nosferatu, Faust, and Metropolis are some of the best films ever made.
I can't stand Mary Pickford or Charlie Chaplin either.

Unfortunately, I've only seen the colorized version with rock music. I'd love to see the original. The girl who played the double role as the robot and the heroine was the most brilliant actress I've ever seen. All she had to do was walk in the room and you immediately knew which character she was.

Shame this thread is picture-less yet. I'm going to fix that.

I haven't seen a whole lot of silent movies, but I have seen The Phantom of The Opera with Lon Chaney. Marvelous movie.

I must admit I haven't seen too many such movies as well but I was always fascinated with times when they were released.

Btw, it reminds me of such a joke:

Old woman is complaining: - You are my husband but you don't treat me as well as a husband should treat his wife; wherever I go, I must go there on my own because you never want to keep me company!
- But my dear, how can you say that I never go out with you? Once I even took you to the cinema.
- True but now we already have sound films.

That was one Mel Brooks best.

I haven't seen a lot of them. My favourites were Metropolis and several of Chaplin's (especially Modern times).

Has anybody else seen 'Pandora's Box' with Louise Brooks? I watched it recently & thought it was maybe the best silent movie I've seen.

There is not a single Chaplin routine that can even hold a candle to the average Buster Keaton bit. Some of them are just jaw-droppingly good.

I want to see that one. I'm a big Mel Brooks fan myself.
