"Sue me," Borat responds to Kazakh legal threat
from Reuters:
Sacha Baron Cohen, who plays the spoof Kazakh television reporter in his "Da Ali G Show," incurred the wrath of Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry this month after appearing as Borat at the annual MTV Europe Music Awards.
He described shooting dogs for fun and said his wife could not leave Kazakhstan as she was a woman. The Foreign Ministry said his behavior was unacceptable and that Cohen might be serving political orders to tarnish Kazakhstan's reputation.
Responding in character as Borat, Cohen, who is Jewish, said: "I like to state, I have no connection with Mr Cohen and fully support my government's position to sue this Jew."
"Since 2003 ... Kazakhstan is as civilized as any other country in the world," he said on his website, www.borat.kz.
"Women can now travel on inside of bus, homosexuals no longer have to wear blue hat and age of consent has been raised to eight years old."
One Western diplomat in the Central Asian state's biggest city Almaty said he at least partly sympathized with the Kazakh government in trying to set the record straight.
"They are damned if they do (respond) and damned if they don't," he said. "It's sort of unfortunate that he hit upon Kazakhstan."
I like the Ali G show and Borat is my favourite character, but it's not hard to see why they'd be offended. Some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is genius but stupendously insulting. Most of his interviewees are unaware of what is going on so they'd be getting a pretty bad impression of Kazakhistan.
I imagine I'd be insulted too if my country were portrayed like that but it's sattire, not reality. He uses Kazakhstan simply because most people in the West know nothing about the country and they'll believe anything he tells them about it. It's a great bit. The fashion model one is good too.
i think borat is brilliant. as i understand it, he is not suggesting that people from kazikhstan are like borat. the joke is on the people who he interviews- he makes them look foolish by exposing their lack of knowledge about different cultures. if i thought the character was mocking the people of kazikhstan i would not approve of it.
my favourite sketch was the one where he went to an open-mic country music club and treated the audience to a performance of "Throw the Jew Down the Well." at first the audience were suspicious of him becasue he looked "foreign" but they started to warm to him when he got to the chorus. by the second chorus, they were joining in. the irony is that the man who plays borat, is jewish.
