I caught this on tv last weekend and I can't believe it's not more well known. I can't stop thinking about it, it's just so absorbing. Mentally I went there and stayed there.

wow, a response!

aw well i'm a single older woman who was also set up to look after the old folks (who weren't nearly as pleasant or entertaining as big Edie), but unlike li'l Edie, i managed to escape my parents, so i relate to it fairly strongly. thanks for commenting.

I just find that a strange but common social phenomenon, the spinster daughter obliged and often deliberately damaged in order that the parent will have a 'nurse' or companion....a bit like the movie "The Heiress", later remade with Jennifer Jason Leigh as "Washington Square".
