I have trouble going to the movies because I cannot stand the noise generated by the people around me. Obviously talking, but also eating popcorn and slurping on drinks, especially when the person is looking for the last piece of pop corn or slurping up the dreggs of coke, I just want to scream at them to stop. I have had a complete meltdown over talking in the past.

I am just wondering how common this is.

WOW. OK, the "crunch, crunch, crunch" of the popcorn makes me feel like I am going to blow something! Also, I feel so confined with all those people so close to me (and you don't even want to know what goes through me when one of the touches me!). I very, very rarely go to the movies. It is just too stressful for me, I can't enjoy the movie and afterwards I have to go home, put my pillow over my head (my little sensory deprivation chamber. LOL) and lie there for a very long time.

The other thing I can not stand is someone crunching on an apple, celery, chips, etc. That will drive me over the edge! My co worker eats an apple every single, blasted day and it drives me nuts! I want to reach over and at the very least knock it to the floor. I always work with my headphones on and my music blaring (metal cuts out just about everything), but sometimes it just isn't enough. When that happens I have to get up and walk out for a while.

Vacuums, power tools, fans and other noisy objects like that have the same effect. I want to clap my hands over my ears and crouch in a corner. It is painful, stressful, grates on my nerves and it hurts my entire body.

Ugh, I hate going to the movie theatre because of all the noise. It smells funny, theres always that blasted little brat kicking the back of your chair and that person who has been to see the movie before telling you 'Oh this bit's great'... 'Oh this is the bit where...' I haven't been to see a movie since I was 15... that was 5 years ago.

I personally like to go see movies at the theater, but mostly a couple weeks after the movie debuted. There are less people around to talk and kick chairs.

As for the sensory bit, I think I am only truly sensitive to it if it happens in an area where it SHOULD be quiet. Ex: house, library, when I am alone with my headphones on. It annoys me when I am sitting on the couch, and someone starts munching on chips or takes a long drink, like they haven't had something to drink in a week.

Places like the theater, mall, and restaurant are supposed to have a lot of people, so I just have to mentally prepare to actually put myself into the crowds.

Me too - I almost never go to the movies - way too many distractions, so I never enjoy it.

I just went to the movie theatres a couple days ago for the first time and notice how rampant commercialism is now. I don't really enjoy commercials or the thirty minutes worth before the cinema starts.

It wasn't so bad back when I tons of money to burn. These days the disturbances have been so bad that I just avoid cinemas all together. The only time I'll go is if it's a movie I really want to see and cannot wait until DVD (e.g. Star Trek, Harry Potter 6, so forth)

I have extreme sensory issues with noises. And I've left and gotten a refund before the film started if a group of loud people came in right behind me in a small theater. I'm very picky about which movie theaters I go to, and my friends back home know this. I try and find theaters in more artistic communities at certain times of night I've found are more often frequented by other film-lovers, and not obnoxious drunk crowds of people just looking for something to do.

I refuse to go to movie theaters that are closest to the biggest high schools in my city, and I'm even wary about the ones close to college housing.

So far I've found my system works fairly well. Some movies are made to be seen on the big screen, and I wish I could see more of them that way- but if I'm going to pay $10 for a ticket, I'll do my best to ensure I don't spend the whole movie being pissed off.

I love going to the movie theater. I try to make sure to go to the first showing on a Monday though because it's usually empty then. Unfortunately, I went to see the new Underworld movie this week on a Tuesday 2:45 showing and there was a big group of rowdy adults in the back with three kids that looked around five years old. I can't stand it when people talk or bring their children to movies they should not be in. I definitely hate the talking more though. I also don't go to movie theaters with friends because no matter how many times I ask them politely not to talk during the movie, they feel the need to repeat funny lines or make what they think are clever comments about what's going on.

Sticky floors
Screaming kids
Excessive talking
Overpriced junky and nasty snacks, including popcorn with rancid butter and unpopped kernels
Ear-crushing volume and amplified background noise
The smell of pee

I don't mind any of that stuff when I go to a movie theater. I'm kinda use to it.

I'll never forget the time I went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The high pitched squeaky-voiced teenage girl behind me answered her phone and gave the caller a play-by-play of the most climactic scene.

"Okay, so this Harry guy is, like in this graveyard place, and the bad guy's there, and his friend just died..."

It continued throughout the scene, even with the angry reactions of everyone around her. Pfft.

i hate it when there are too many people, cause if there are, i can't like put my legs up on the seat in front of me and text and laugh loudly without feeling bad about it.

There are some luxury cinemas nearby, which cost quite a lot more to visit. They have large comfortable paired seats, and very few seats per theatre.

Personally cannot cope with close proximity to other people, and a lot of the other anarchy mentioned in this thread. Sometimes its nice to share a group experience like a movie. Just not too closely :)
