My son has not yet been "officially" diagnosed with AS as of yet, but I'm just waiting to get an appointment with a psychiatrist that specializes in that area to get one. He attends a partial progam at a local behavioral health center, and the teachers there see it, my mother and I have read everything we could get our hands on through the internet and see it, and his psychologist (who he's only seen once and then I saw him once to give him more info w/o the distraction of my son) has tentatively diagnosed him as AS but is still going to see him more to confirm it for himself as well as for me. The psychiatrist that he is currently seeing is absolutely no good whatsoever, and we had to switch to him from a psych who's only answer seemed to be to up his secondary medication to see if that helped him. His current psych had the attitude that we were bothering him by being there for his appointment and when I brought up AS said that "everyone diagnoses everyone with that now".
So that's the abridged version of my story. I'm planning on getting alot more info on AS from the book store, etc. and am hoping it will help me and my family in dealing with him and helping him deal with himself.

Thanks,
Nikki

Welcome.
Unwritten rules of Social Relationships by Temple Grandin and Sean Barron has a lot to offer on parenting an aspie.

Also, be wary of negative resources, like bad shrinks and Autism Speaks.

Tony Attwood's books are a fantastic resource as well. If you have specific questions or concerns, it never hurts to ask about it in the Parents' Discussion board --->LINK<--- as someone here may have gone through similar experiences.

And welcome to WP! :)

Hi mommie2alex

welcome to WP.

I think that psychs who think that way ["everyone diagnoses everyone with that now"] have no clue what they are talking about. Sure, it is becoming a more popular diagnosis, but only because it is now being recognized more than it was in the past...not because it is some "fad".
Good luck with getting your son diagnosed and hopefully this next psych will be better.

I hope you enjoy posting here.
