I guess it's time I introduced myself, as it looks like I may be hangin around here a bit.

I'm relatively new to the concept of Asperger's. Wish I had known about it as a kid, though I wonder if I would have been diagnosed. Unlike the generic autism description, I am highly athletic. But on the social/intellectual side, I fall way on the Aspie side. I wasn't surprised to see the aspie test say just that (if I'm reading that chart correctly).

Since coming to this realization, I find it interesting that every time I have told someone who knows me well, they think I'm kidding. I tell them this is why I never go to parties, why I talk funny, why I have never looked them in the eye, why I always take them literally... but they've seen Rain Man, and they know what autism is. Oh well, at least my wife's starting to believe me.

Otherwise about me... I'm getting close to 40 years old at this writing. I had been holed up in an aspie favorite (the field of I.T.) for the past fifteen years. I just quit my job and have no idea what I am doing next. But just because I was good at I.T. doesn't mean I enjoy it. It seems so pointless to me: I'm too philosophical to simply design systems.

So I just recently set myself adrift, to take a break for a little while and then see what I come up with. A kinda scary thing: a non-social person leaving his one major integration with society. But I'm looking forward to the future now... a feeling that gradually died as I worked (way) too long at one job.

So, anyway... hello. :)

I tend to do one sport at a time. For the past years, it has been biking. I ride a crummy little mountain bike, yet usually only the serious cyclists (racers and tourers) seem to pass me.

Previous sports have been tennis, golf (yuck), disc golf (much better), soccer, and hiking (if that counts). I loved soccer, but hated being on a team. Maybe if I had been on better teams... :?

Hi Toe

Welcome to WP

It's a shame that in todays day and age, some people still associate ALL forms of Autism to rainman. Hopefully eventually they will begin to understand that it is a SPECTRUM...not just a "one type fits all" scenario.
Yes, I.T does indeed seem a common career option for aspies. I know someone who works in I.T and they say that they are good at it but find it pointless, aswell. I guess that we ARE known to stay within our comfort zones though. So, you quit your job. Good luck with with finding what you consider a "life with meaning". :D

Welcome Toe, and may I congratulate you on having the courage to setting yourself adrift. And also glad to see a fellow philosopher :D

Oh, and I forgot to mention snorkeling. It's not much of a sport, but if you love it as much as I do, it's pretty physically demanding. Especially if you combine it with kayaking. :)

The pic I am currently using as an avatar is of a caribbean reef squid from the waters of a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico. There was a whole school of them in the shallows, and they let me get within inches of them. Truly alien lookin' creatures.
