Myself Today 07-23-2008 10:30 pm Anson's Blog
I'm a high functioning person with autism. I get along great with people that are older than me. I listen to older people that I know because they have more life experience than I do and they're usually nuero-typical. I'm noticing more and more as I get older that young adults my age are often in groups, joking around, making plans, and having conversations. I've taken the advice of people and have tried certain strategies like observing groups and really paying attention to the kinds of things they talk about. I find it difficult to know what questions to ask to keep a conversation going. I welcome suggestions for what to do in these situations. I really only know how to be myself and it doesn't occur to me to pretend to be someone I'm not and I don't know how to do that anyway. I'd really like to hear from girls and guys in my age range {17-20} who have had similar experiences that I've had. Is anybody out there empathetic to my situation and that would like to share their experiences with me? I want kids that I can hang out with and do stuff with on a regular basis. I'm also thinking that it would be a good idea to organize a group for guys and girls with high functioning autism and aspies to get together. Bye for now.

Dear Tim, I am Ansons' Father. Anson was concerned about your comment and so am I. Can you explain what you meant by "responsibility" and "Someone of your maturity, Bunnies". Explain what Meatwad means.

heh. i do believe it's a nonsensical quote from the cartoon network TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." Meatwad would be one of the main characters...a rather loveable, naieve (sp?), umm...wad of meat...? kind of like a meatball, but uncooked.

It was from an episode of ATHF. Meatwad was explaining to the Aqua Teens' neighbor Carl about responsiblilty, when all of a sudden, he noticed a stash of chocolate bunnies in Carl's house.

Hi, and welcome to WP. I definitely understand where you're coming from, I'm 18 and I have a lot of similar problems with social interaction. What i've found is that as I relax and try to worry less about the result, I can just go with the flow. It's come with age and time. My main problem now is confidence and the logistics of actually meeting people (seeing as how I'm no longer in full time education and currently looking for work) but I'm still very introverted and the problems you list there are the ones I face too, things like carrying on a conversation and such. I hope you can find some good advice here and some good company, and I'm sure with time and confidence things will slowly get easier.

Enjoy your stay!
