Hobbies and Interests: Hmm, I'm a polymath, so everything? I'll just give my current: philosophy, computational sociology, opera and singing opera, learning Italian, physics, medical research concerning "obesity," Mozart, writing science fiction

Why are you here? My ship landed a few hours ago and I'm still trying to find the leader. Good thing, because my last planet was a real drag! Seriously, though, I've been fighting with being an Aspie for about a year --- and I think I'm lately getting so fed up with NT ignorant complacencies and expectations, especially the expectation that everyone magically "communes" with some singular human experience, and the lying and truth distortion committed in their daily lives, I needed to be a member of some place where these things were *not* the norm.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I'm not disordered, thanks. I'm different from the neurological majority. In some contexts in comparison to me, *they* are disordered. It's relative.

Favorite subjects: Ugh, lots. But my favorites? Philosophy, physics, music.

Year/Grade: Working, graduated with an MA in 2007.

Favorite music: Lots! Mozart, Frou Frou, Fiona Apple, Live, George Winston, Muse, Emiliana Torrini, Kate Havnevik, Seals & Crofts, Genesis, the Beatles, Puccini, Sarah Brightman, Nightwish, Tarja, Sublime.

Books: Atlas Shrugged, the Foundation series, Contact, the Song of the Lark, the Phantom, the End of Eternity, the Fountainhead, the Emily series (LM Montgomery), Jane Eyre

TV shows/Movies: Battlestar Galactica, anything Star Trek (especially Deep Space Nine), Hell's Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance?, Daria

Instrument: Voice (coloratura soprano), have played - piano, guitar, baritone horn, violin, flute, trumpet (jazz)

Do you like sports? Yes, football. I don't like playing them much, just watching. No other sports.

Family: Fiance, three future stepchildren. None really know what being an "Aspie" means...most ignore it, or have forgotten I've ever mentioned it.

Clothing: Most of the time. :)

How did you find this website? I kind of knew it existed for a while, finally got around to creating an account. It's complicated. :P

Job: special projects coordinator --- "project manager" junior (ick). But I get to research and program, so it's not all bad.

Plans for the future? Computational sociology? Opera singer? Professional house flipper? Mom? Dunno.

Age: nearly 39, but then I wish I was 21 again :)

Location: Sydney, Australia

Hobbies and Interests: Running internet radio station, swimming, reading, internet, astronomy (solar system, NASA, and early manned space flights), drawing / painting / art, graphic designing, writing my own novels, and listing to lots, lots, lots of music. Also love early 80's video gaming.

Why are you here? Diagnosed with Autism, then aspergers in early seventies, and hope to share some of my life experiences to help others :)

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Autism 1971, Asperger's 1976

Favorite subjects: I love talking and sharing ideas with others.

Year/Grade: At present, Music Business Course.

Favorite music: top 40 music from the early seventies, through to the nineties. I am totally addicted to eighties music, give me a week, and I will run you off the top ten hits from that actual week.

Books: I have no favourites, but I tend to read all my stuff through text to voice programs, as I'm vision impaired. I generally read newspapers, biographies, documentary books-non fiction and so on.

TV shows/Movies: I confess...... Knight Rider, I own the entire DVD series, and Battlestar Galactica. I love any police video shows like Worlds Wildest Videos and so on. My favourite movies would be the musical kind, like Flashdance, Footloose, Xanadu, but my all time favourite would be the earlier Star Wars Trilogy.

Instrument: Mucking about with Cubase, Reason and a Keyboard, I have several hours at these things, but I never actually finished a tune..... all those sound banks, drum kits, instruments....... I'm just like a kid in a lolly shop. I would have to call it more of a hobby of distraction. I seem to get much joy with just tinkering around with it.

Do you like sports? Swimming.

Family: Youngest out of four brothers, and parents that I avoid as much as possible.

Clothing: loose track-suits during winters, light loose shorts and shirts during summer. I hate work clothing, feels like I'm always being strangled at the waste. :)

How did you find this website? Told about it by South Sydney Asperger's Support Service.

Job: After twenty years of courses, and work experiences, I'm still looking, Asperger's is still somewhat of a mystery to Australian Employers :(

Any comments? ah-mm!

What is your first name? terri

Age: 38

Location: kalamazoo, michigan

Hobbies and Interests:

writing a sci-fi/sci-fantasy book. reading-a lot. lots of sci-fi, thrillers, non-fiction on philosophy & physics...but really i'm omnivorous. internet junkie. have a cat, kaya skye, who i've "enrolled" in two social networking sites. she has many more friends than i do on facebook, myspace, tagged, Hi5, MyYearbook & Care2 combined. this might be because my brother cajoled me into those sites, while catster & pikapet were my choices. either that or kaya has better social skills. astronomy-if i could figure out how to get my telescope to work. mythology, all sorts. religion-all sorts, which encompasses mythology. theoretical physics, especially chaos theory. fascinated by heisenberg's observer effect. i sketch/draw, but not particularly well. take lots of pictures. philosophy, history, all sciences, psychology, anthropology-basically i'm a knowledge geek & trivia junkie, though i don't collect facts indiscriminately or even deliberately. i just surf the net and follow link to link, then do a search on something tangentially related, then go link to link...cyber breadcrumbs. this could go on forever...

Why are you here?
"little lamb who made thee, dost thou know who made thee?"
oops, you're referring to this SITE...my bad. an attempt to bring my parameters into a sharper focus through compare & contrast. also to get advice & feedback on specific situations & issues.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):

which diagnosis? the answer to this is nebulous. since i have vivid memories of my mother screaming: "you're not autistic!" at me whenever i would rock or not have "enough" expression on my face, or stare at dust motes in a shaft of sunlight, or try to use her hand as my own, or not speak, or get reports sent back from school that i never smiled...i feel safe in inferring that the diagnosis was at least proposed from a very early date. those screams are among my earliest memories. i think someone proposed "holding therapy" to her when i was about eleven...i eventually went limp, but after that became violent whenever she attempted to touch me. i think that was an entirely rational response on my part, honestly. she eventually modulated her approach to "you're too smart to be autistic", when i knocked the roof off the IQ test and got into gifted. they wanted to take me to the county to try a different test, but my original tester (a man i remember with fondness, even though i only knew him a few hours) nixed that idea. in the notes i later read he stated that: "we know as much as we need to know in order to provide appropriate services which are acceptable to the parents. while the subject performed exceptionally well, she was obviously ill-at-ease and exhibited stress-response tics and tended to withdraw. futher testing would in my view be counter-productive and redundant in light of previously noted resistance on the part of the parents." my mother seemed to decide that my 160+ (gee aren't i special? and here i am unemployed, living on disability...) IQ was the explanation for my eccentricities...upside to this is she discontinued the narcotic dosage my pediatrician had put me on at four months of age. why a narcotic? i have no clue, except that it apparently began as a measure to let my parents sleep through the night, and was continued at my mother's insistence.
at fourteen i was diagnosed with depression and OCD. at eighteen i was diagnosed with bipolar & PTSD. in my early twenties i heard the term "asperger's" applied to me for the first time-1992, this was. the psychiatrist said it was almost impossible to definitely diagnose with no documented history of childhood autism, though in his opinion it fit. on the official record he put "schizotypal personality disorder", because it was more acceptable at that point. (shrug) he said (and told my parents, who showed up at the hospital uninvited): "terri is not like other people. she will never be like other people. this is just something which is true." mother said he was condemning me to a life without hope. he said that all depended on what i was hoping for. she proceeded to reel off a list of hopes & dreams...he interrupted and said he was interested in my hopes, not hers.
asperger's was again brought up in the mid-nineties, and more or less confirmed...as confirmed as it gets, as i was told. is this typical or am i just confusing?

Favorite subjects: i think i covered this in hobbies & interests...common thread is finding the common threads between them and weaving them into a tapestry of ever-shifting meaning...

Year/Grade: umm...i attended college sporadically for six years, never graduated.

Favorite music: alternative & classical for the most part...though i'm pretty eclectic, and like women artists...of course, that's lately.

Books: umm...anything, almost. currently reading cosmos & psyche by richard tarnes. fascinating book concerning the evolution of human thought. evolution in general as a multi-purpose window interests me...evolutionary psychology, biology, morality...i've read a lot of dawkins. lots of sci/fi and thrillers for my comfort food.

TV shows/Movies: highlander, painkiller jane, house m.d., monk, x-files, law & order (sometimes), csi (at times), history channel (at times), start trek universe (at times) i shift between obsessions.

loved dogma, seven, the pan labyrinth, the gift, brazil...others, but not coming to mind. for a time in college i was weirdly obsessed with "who framed roger rabbit?" kept sneaking into the theater and watching it over & over...

Instrument: i make noises on the harmonica.

Do you like sports? sometimes baseball.

Family: my nuclear family is all i have contact with because my mother boycotted the rest of her side of the family shortly after her parents died shortly before i turned five. i was told as an adult that people were afraid of her, so backed off...as this left two small children in the care of a woman adults feared and a man none of them trusted, i don't consider them family. i speak to my mother mainly because if i don't she harasses me. i speak to my father on his birthday, father's day, and if he answers the phone we make awkward conversation until he tracks mother down in the house. my brother though-we are very close, and much alike. we "speak" almost daily via IM. he is quite probably the only person whose death would matter to me...does that make me cold & evil? i don't need his constant presence...the knowledge that he exists and actually seeks out contact with me is an overflowing bounty.

Clothing: yes, i'm wearing some. i have a couple of "outfits", the rest is jeans, sweats, shorts & t-shirts. i'm aware that i should do something about that...but can't seem to care.

How did you find this website? was fiddling around on the web trying to see if i could "consolidate" some of my diagnosis (am i ocd or is that part of the asperger's? am i bipolar or...etc.) and ran across a link.

Job: currently unemployed and living on disability. was a cook for several years, searching for a job but it's difficult to even leave the house sometimes. eight-year gap in my work history is going to make this an uphill battle.

Plans for the future? get a job. hook up with voc rehab to train for a better job. save money & move closer to my brother in montana-i've always been attracted to the pacific northwest, maybe washington state. this would also put me even further from my parents in alabama. my brother and i both wound up in states bordering canada...he jokes that it's like we decided to flee to canada but stopped just short of the border. i'd like to finish the first of my planned trilogy by the time i'm 40, even if it's not in a form to be submitted. i would love to have enough money & other resources to run an animal sanctuary or no-kill rescue center. if i ever figure out what i want/need a degree for, i'd like to go back to school.

Any comments?
i know that "a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" but i'm ridiculous. i have somehow got to get myself going, but seem to be stalled. fear, inertia, disorganization, being chronically overwhelmed...will i ever, ever have a life? (not like any of you can answer that...i'm just feeling a touch on the desperate side just now...)

What is your first name? Dave

Age: 56 solar years as measured by the growth rings on my bones & teeth

Location: South Texas near South Padre Island

Hobbies and Interests: Many and varied = learning Science and some Humanities (but not fine arts), relationships/gender understanding, walking, playing some video games, military history, travel, religions (no proselytizing please), astronomy, quantum theory (just trying to understand the basics) and some charities (Save the Children, Somaly Mam Foundation), oh and of course Sex.

Why are you here? Uh, I feel like probably I belong here but I am not 100% sure or maybe I just don't want to accept it.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I've not been diagnosed YET and am wondering if I should be. It sounds expensive ($2000) and I don't know if my insurance will pay for this. Do you get some kind of disability perk if you do? A parking sticker maybe?

Favorite subjects: See above but also computers and archeology too but NO SPORTS

Year/Grade: Well I feel like I am still 25 so the year must be 1977 and my grade is still probably the bewilderment I felt in Middle and High school so probably 10th grade. I still go to school for the fun of learning when I'm not teaching at the local university.

Favorite music: All kinds, really, except really loud suicide/punk/heavy metal (can't understand the words - prefer rhymes anyway). I also listen to Yodeling, Kaliope, Gregorian chants, Gansta Rap, Banda, etc. It's all rock 'n roll to me.

Books: I used to read a lot of books, especially self-help ones but now I mostly read magazines like Discover, Armchair General, Reader's Digest, National Geographic etc.

TV shows/Movies: Nova, Lexx (4 pilot movies not the series), Riddick, Elani, Shreck, Starman, Robot Chicken, Das Boot, When Harry met Sally, MST 3000

Instrument: Failed at piano and baritone horn and got discouraged. My favorite instrument is my Radar Detector

Do you like sports? No, I hate sports. And I don't understand them because they keep playing the same teams and games over and over year after year with no one finally winning for good. The ONLY sport I ever liked watching was Roller Ball.

Family: Yes; Long suffering wife of 34 years who's mantra is "What's wrong with you? What's wrong with you?", 3 grown (in the legal sense only) children; 2 biological and 1 adopted (the control) and now 2 grandchildren who are most likely Aspies in Darwin Australia.

Clothing: I'm not into clothes except for the utility or legality aspects but I prefer uniforms if I have to wear something.

How did you find this website? My wife and children told me about it and said I should go there.

Job: Retired (as an O-6) from the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service in 2002 and am currently teaching Community-Based Nursing at University of Texas in Brownsville.

Plans for the future? Live long and prosper until I get feeble and then I want the millionaire's death.

Any comments? I'm kind of scared of everyone everyone even though I've looked around the site for a while. :)
