Hello. I'm new to the forum and to diagnosed AS. After nearly 4 years of trying to get people to listen to me, we found an awesome psychologist who reconized AS after talking to my 7 year old son for about 5 minutes explain his current obsession with Star Wars. We finished all the testing and it was conclusive- AS. The psychologist asked me if I had ever entertained the thought that I might have AS. I told him I had been an "odd" child , and it was probably a good possibility. The reason for help with my son is he has had problems with tantrums and aggression at school. He had even been suspended for 7 days. It's been a long process but now we know that we have to look at things differently and take new approaches to things.

This is not the end of the world, but a beginning of a long, bumpy journey.

Hello, Dear Mom, and welcome ... I was 39 when I realized how asperger's defined so many of my traits and quirks...I had never felt freer at that moment of discovery. Our 2nd child, daughter, 18 is autistic with special needs, always understood her better than the other children, and now understand why....For me, when I was a 22 yr. old mom with 2 small children, 1 with special needs, the slogan from Nike, "Just Do It"became my mantra..do what we must do to get her early intervention, therapy, find calm in a stormy moment, etc....Talk anytime to us, we are always listening.....

Thank you for your support. It is just a nice, calming thought that there are people out there that have experienced what we are going through and have survived.

After a few days to reflect on this new journey and the overwelming support I feel, not only here but with the other people in my life, I feel like this is something we can adapt to. In no way will it be easy but we are willing to learn. Thank you.

I'm a teenager with aspergers. I've been diagnosed since I was three years old. I liked the star wars lego sets around five years old. Anyway, the best way to get to me is to learn about my obsessions and talk to me about them or compare my obsessions to me.

Now, I can communicate my needs to everyone. It used to be very frustrating though, so I would flap my arms to de-stress myself. If he is the kind of person who doesn't like hugging or kissing, don't take it personally. A lot of people with autism have sensitivity issues to touch and sound.

Hi welcome, DylansMommy  myself and my older son (14) are on the autism spectrum diagnosed just over 1 year ago now, and to be honest it was where our world began... the road is no long bumpy for us, we understand and accept who we are, but outside the aspie community it can feel like a battle field at times... but we are both very happy proud aspies and hopefully one day as for your son the rest of the world will understand, but at least he has you and therefore his journey will be made so much easier...
