No one has ever wanted to know so much about me, but since I am procrastinating about writing a report….

What is your first name? Janet (from another planet)

Age: 55

Location: Phoenix

Hobbies and Interests: reading, reading, reading, my dogs, yoga, vegan cooking, learning Spanish

Why are you here? Looking for some company

When were you diagnosed? (skip if you don't have a disorder): I was kicked out of church as a preschooler, did poorly all through public school, but my DX wasn’t available in DSM until I was 41 so I flunked grades and was considered a trouble-maker. When I was about 45, I was working for a man with full-blown kanners who insisted that I had autism. We spent 40 hours a week for two years together so he knew me better than anyone else. After looking into it, I have to admit he had a point. I just don’t see why I should shell out hundreds of dollars for someone with letters after their name to tell me what I already know and wouldn’t help me if I label it.

Favorite subjects: biology, exercise physiology, nutrition, autism

Year/Grade: MS

Favorite music: most genres, except musak – however my heart music is the 60s when I was a teen

Books: SciFi, Fantasy, & history. I used to read a lot in the area of my profession, but it is telling that I don’t any more

TV shows/Movies: No TV, but love movies: most genres, but romantic movies are at the bottom and smart thrillers at the top. A good comedy is hard to find, but the laughter is worth a thousand doctors

Instrument: no talent at all (I was the only child out of >60 to be rejected for the 3rd grade choir) but I love to sing – they couldn’t stamp it out of me!! Tra-la-la!! !

Do you like sports? When I play…I am the worst spectator

Family: 5 kids ages 30 – 15 years, three dogs, one sister & one brother, both parents & a sister deceased

Clothing: Yeah, but how would you know? No, I am NOT a fashion diva…

How did you find this website? I was trying to google an acquaintance who had presented at an autism workshop and found this site instead

Job: Speech Language Pathologist (on the spectrum) – what a hoot!

Plans? Plan A = winning Powerball jackpot, Plan B = winning the state lottery jackpot, Plan C = run the rat race for the next 20 years

Any comments? Wrong planet seems like a nice place, but some very bright people hang out here. I am pretty ordinary, but like to chat a bit

Hi Michael,
I was just reading about the transcontenental trains in australia - have you ridden them??? They looked wonderful!

(we are about the same age) Work is getting harder and harder for me. I get too tired dealing with so many different people in a day, but I have to earn a living. My job is all there is between my family and a homeless shelter. In the US aspergers doesn't get any benefits.

     Hi, Janet.
Responses to a few points you made:

JanetFAP wrote:

I suppose there are two you are referring to: The Indian Pacific, which runs east-west between Sydney and Perth, and The Ghan, which runs north-south between Adelaide and Darwin. There are various shorter-distance trains too.
I went from Sydney to Perth on the Indian Pacific in 1971, although in those days the train was somewhat different from what it is now. I think most of the carriages in use today are those that were in use then, and they look similar externally, but they have been extensively refurbished more recently, so that the train has more the appearance of an expensive hotel, whereas in the days I went on it, it looked just like a train - a nice one no doubt, but still a train.
I haven't been on the Indian Pacific since the refurbishment, and am not especially interested in doing so. I think part of the appeal to me was precisely in the fact that everything looked like a train, was characteristic of a train. Travelling on the Indian Pacific is extremely expensive now, especially if you want the higher class of sleeping berth (necessary if as a lone person you don't want to share a compartment with a stranger), and I don't expect ever to do this. My interest is considerably less if the train is done up in a way so as to make it look as unlike a train as possible.
I went by train from Adelaide to Alice Springs in central Australia on the Ghan in 1980, but the Ghan in those days was a completely different train from what it is now, using considerably older carriages, it went only to Alice Springs; also, you had to change trains at Port Augusta and Marree because of changes in railway gauge.
To my mind, both trains, while no doubt very swanky, are just too touristy for my liking, based on what I've read about them. You can read more about these here:

  http://www.gsr.com.au
  http://www.gsr.com.au/our-trains/the-ghan/the-journey.php
  http://www.gsr.com.au/our-trains/indian-pacific/the-journey.php

I have not been on any long-distance train since 1980, and my whole interest in trains has faded almost completely, even though it was intense, even obsessive, in the 1960s and 1970s. This is partly because of circumstances and changing factors in my life, and partly because Australian trains have changed in various ways that I just don't like much.
I even joined the RailPage forum a few years ago, thinking I might re-awaken my old nostalgia for trains; but I posted half a dozen messages, then faded away. I've gone back every 6 months or so and read a few things there, but so far haven't felt moved to post messages there again. I also felt I didn't fit in very well with the culture (as I perceived it) on that forum, and that doesn't help you to post more often.

Sorry to hear that you are compelled by financial need to work in a job you must find a constant strain. I gather sickness benefits or pensions in the U.S. are far less generous than those in Australia. America may be a great place to live if you can fit in with the capitalist culture and are bright and clever and conform to social norms - but I suspect it would be a horrendous place for those with disabilities, or just those who are eccentric or don't conform to the norms.
As for myself, I do receive a pension because of my mental health problems, and I am probably quite literally unemployable - but I am mindful that, without this assistance (plus a relatively modest independent income from an inheritance 10 or so years ago), I would probably be on the streets or in an institution of some sort, wishing I was dead.
But my comments about dreading the future weren't so much about financial survival, but more about deteriorating mental state and increasing loneliness as the few people I am close to die one by one (most of them are older than me, and I really haven't made close relationships to anyone in the generation younger than me, and often feel I can't relate to them at all). I am probably closer to my mother than most 55-year-olds would be, and I think in particular it's going to hit me extremely hard when she dies (she is 80 now, and still quite youthful in some ways - but she obviously can't live for ever).
I am not married and am probably incapable of falling in love with a woman, and I expect a very desperately lonely old age, with worsening depression and a sense of the pointlessness of life, and I frankly dread it. One good thing is that I don't have the responsibility of looking after children, when I cannot even manage my own life, let alone bring up other young lives.
My condition has been a curse since about the age of 2, so I tend to strongly disagree with the politically-correct view that disorders such as many of us here have are not really a disability, a life-sentence, etc., but merely a different personality type, or even a special ability. I just can't see any sense in this - which is why I started the thread "Is Asperger's syndrome / autism a disability?" - just to see what people on the other side of this thought.

Anyway, maybe it's not the right place here to go into too much detail about matters of this sort.

Regards, Michael.

I am sorry that the train has gone this way. It is like in The accidental Tourist (Anne Tyler) about a travel writer for people who hate to travel and want everything to be as American as possible in their travels. I used to live on a small sailboat and really liked the convenience of traveling without packing/unpacking. The train may still hold that allure, but I cannot afford a high priced hotel.

Maybe because I have such a hard time working with others (due to my quirks, not theirs) and I have raised a passel of kids, being alone (I have been single for about 12 years) holds great appeal to me. Running the rat race ad nauseum as proscribed by capitalistic America is what gives me a black outlook. I love all the families I work with, but to see six or so a day, five days a week, is very exhausting. Being able to follow my own interests most days instead of other people’s would be lovely – but probably the grass just looks greener on your side.

Maybe your thread would be a better place to respond, so I will go there.
