Hello all. I only found out about AS this last year, but I am fairly certain that I have suffered from the disorder all my life. I am a 26 year old male working I.T. in an office building, which actually works out really well for me.

Currently I am undiagnosed, but I am undergoing a process to switch my healthcare plan to one that accommodates the option and expense of therapy. So in about three months I can perhaps BEGIN to know for sure.

Anyway, in the meantime, I thought I might as well join an internet community on the subject.

Hi Caulfield, I love your avatar. That's a totoro, right?

I'm a big fan of Miyazaki's films :) .

"Kiki's Delivery Service" is my personal favourite, although "Tonari No Totoro" is great too. :) ("Totoro" was originally meant to be shown as a double bill with "Graveyard of the Fireflies" to Japanese schoolkids - a slightly incongruous pairing I reckon.....)

Kiki is also my favorite, Tafkash :) . I have a soft spot for Totoro since I saw it when I was younger, though the whole mother in the hospital thing kind of scared me at that age.

"Grave of the Fireflies" and "My Neighbor Totoro" is indeed an odd pairing. The film society at our school once showed them as a double feature, and I couldn't understand why, but I guess that's the reason.

When I watched "Grave of the Fireflies," one of my friends gave me and my other friend the same type of tin with the little star candies in it as the one the girl in the film has. It was so sad, and that made us feel guilty!

Yeah it's a totoro. I've seen all of Miyazaki's stuff except for Porco Rosso and Howl's Moving Castle. They all make me tear up at the end (except for Castle of Cagliostro). I saw Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies as well. The double feature thing sounds odd. You know Amazon sells the two DVDs together at a special reduced price. Very strange...

My favorite is Kiki as well because I really like the main character and that artist with the birds. Totoro and Spirited Away are to me the most magical however. And Mononoke and Laputa are the deepest most moving ones. Cagliostro is of course the funniest. (the Nausicaa anime is moving as well, but I like the manga better)

I'd say "Porco Rosso" is definitely Miyazaki's weakest film, but still worth hunting down.... Can't wait for "Howl's Moving Castle" though.....

Well, Japan anyway. :) Hayao Miyazaki is an animator, often referred to as "The Japanese Disney", and his (and Studio Ghibli's in general) films are transcendentally wonderful. "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" were his 2 most recent films that you may have come across ("Spirited Away" is now officially the most successful non-English language film of all time). This is a good link to find out more: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/

I have seen most of his films, I haven't seen the one with the tanuki and I have only seen part of the Lupin films. I haven't gotten to see "Howl's Moving Castle" yet, either.

I really love Princess Mononoke, as I am interested in both mythology, nature, and animals, and that has all three :) . Plus, the animation is absolutely astounding. I want to live in a forest like that some day!

Nausicaa and Mononoke have very similar stories/themes, and I think Mononoke gets a lot of criticism for that. I saw Mononoke first, so I guess I wasn't biased in that way.

Have you seen "Whispers of the Heart"? I thought that was a pretty poor film, especially by Miyazaki's standards.

I thought "Porco Rosso" was all right. One of my friends really loves it, though. It just doesn't really strike my interest.

You mean "Pom Poko"? I've got it on DVD somewhere, and once watched about 10 minutes of it, and just haven't gotten around to watching the rest yet..... It was a little..... twee, shall we say....

Careful.... Only "Castle Of Cagliostro" is a Miyazaki film. The other Lupin films all have their moments, but none are a patch on "Cagliostro"...... And all the others generally contain a little more "fan service" and "colourful dialogue" than Miyazaki's opus does...... You've been warned.... :)

....and don't forget Laputa. :) You could, if you were trying to be ultra critical of Miyazaki, make note of the fact that "Nausicaa", "Laputa" and "Mononoke" all have more than a little in common plot/theme wise....

Well, it was actually by Yoshifumi Kondoh, but I won't get too picky.... :) I actually thought it was really quite good, personally - a bit "gentle" perhaps, but all the more satisfying for it, I felt.

My persional Ghibli ratings of films that I've seen (out of 10) (cue bad Jonathan Woss impersonation):

Castle Of Cagliostro: 9
Nausicaa: 8
Laputa: 7
My Neighbour Totoro: 9
Kiki's Delivery Service: 10
Porco Rosso: 6
Princess Mononoke: 8
Spirited Away: 7
Grave Of The Fireflies: 9
Only Yesterday: 6
Whisper Of The Heart: 7
The Cat Returns: 7
