wow, you really are high-functioning [if you are]! wish i could chat with you IRL but i am not $ufficiently well-off to live in your area of the country. i am curious, though- you being a psychological counselor, my little brain would think that you would be in the professional neighborhood of your fellows who could have helped you find out one way or another. just some idle brain f*rts on my part, though.

you mentioned you like true stories, that is a big clue, as many aspies distinctly dislike most [if not all] fiction. you mentioned computers- IT departments tend to be rich in aspies as well. speaking of honesty, many aspies fall-down when it comes to lying, as this requires "theory of mind" which is a noted aspie weakness. ok, some more idle brain f*rts;+) IOW i am no expert, just somebody with some experience therein [my own, at least]
happy trails!

Just sticking my head in to see if I found the right place. I found this place by actually typing "I am on the wrong planet" in the search textbox.

Holy crap.

If being an aspie is the average of all these posted comments then I am home. I red lots of postings and I feel like I broke down the brick wall and found a happy fun world full of color (think Roger Rabbit). You people think just like I do. I thought I was alone.

That's funny about not liking fiction. My wife is a Ttitanic buff. When the James Cameron version is played at home I like the first 1/2 hour where it's like a documentary. Once the old woman starts talking and the time shifts to 1912 or so I go do something else. I can only read fiction when I am stuck in airports or airplanes (it has to be science fiction). I can read random pages on wikipedia for hours. Did you know that there are some objects in the night sky who's orbit is actually horseshoe shaped? Figure that out.

hi there:+)
just like [the fact that] not all AS folk are numerate, also not all of us are totally anti-fiction, but perhaps mostly antifiction, with a big number of scifi fans here on this forum. the lion's share of boobtube series [sitcoms, dramedys et al, are insipid and totally lacking in entertainment value for me, and the "reality" shows are "passively" scripted and are not totally spontaneous ["NO! are you serious??"] plus they are chock-full of nasty politics so i avoid them. a tiny minority of movies i find stimulate my imagination, so i watch them. titanic was one, i viewed it as if it happened in an alternate universe, as existential speculation. otherwise the screenplay/dialogue therein is total piffle.

I can watch fiction on TV if it is compelling. Will Tivo reruns of 'How its made'. So much time is spent trying to read a story and not only is there the risk of a bad ending, but what do you walk away with. Spend 3 hours reading about how to wire a home, or what happens to Harry Potter. It's entirely irrational and personal far as I can tell. The formula for fiction is irritating. Beginning middle end. The beggining has details, the middle has stuff that happend, the ending , what? 5 pages to end a 300 page book? The show "Lost" breaks this mold, but still, am irritated becuase that's an hour I wont get back. It's like I super value my time but still waste it completely.

I saw Titanic in the theater when it came out. I was choked up. But sitting through it again? are you kidding me.

Also, i don't care what diagnosis everyone here is, just based on those who make comments I am glad to be called whatever you would like us to be called. I know I am not full blown Autistic, but if autism is the set of values between a and b then my car can get me there.
