Hello, my name is Graham and I come from England.

I thought I might have AS a few years ago when I was at school but then I changed my mind because of the way AS was represented in fiction (being naive, I thought this was accurate).
But I recently read about the myths and the truths and now I think I probably do have it.

For example, I thought that people with AS have no grasp of humour so I thought "I cannot have AS because I am a bit of a clown and I have a fast wit". But also I had trouble understanding when other people were joking. I had a girlfriend once who would sometimes say jokey, teasey things like "Hey meanie! I don't like you anymore!" and would sometimes have to ask if she really meant that. So basically I understand comedy but I cannot read it so well.

Also I think this may be an aspect of my Aspergers... I walk my dog daily on the moor near my house but if I see another dog walker walking my way I would go a different way to avoid talking to them (It seems to be a polite and good mannered thing to have generall small talk with fellow dog walkers in the same way that all bus drivers seem to wave at each other even when they work for diferrent firms!) I like to try and walk my Susie (my dog) when I think the moor will be the most quiet.

Anyway, it is nice to find this site and I hope to meet some friendly people here.

hello there Barddeekin :)
you'll surely have 30-some thousand folk here to chat at and with. interesting you mentioned what to do when you are out walking and somebody else comes up from the opposite direction. when i was in the military, to get out of saluting officers i would often spot them and their shiny brass insignia from a long ways off, then purposely steer around to avoid encountering them. for dog walkers, that might be prudent also just to avoid the dogs meeting and possibly fighting.

Hey Graham, welcome to the forum

Don't stress yourself out with feeling you MUST talk to other dog walkers - a smile in their direction accompanied with a nod of your head is all is needed for other path users....just enjoy your time with your dog - that's what matters!

Beware the many myths about A.S. The web is loaded with them.
