I've been really depressed lately and at the same time becoming more convinced that I have some form of autism. The more I read about it the more it seems to apply and explain things that have happened in my life/ the way i act. I don't know lots about it but am feeling pretty lonely and misunderstood right now so thought this would be the right place to talk to people and find out more:)
I'm 22 and from the UK, so erm yeah, hi.....

Hi there OneStepBeyond,

A simple way to find out more about yourself (like do you have autsim) is to take the 'AQ test' you can then take the result to your GP. Your GP can, if necessary, refer you to specialist help.

Oh and yes, welcome to WP!! !

Where does one find this AQ test you speak of? o_O

and also... if i do go to my GP and get officially diagnosed or see a specialist, what difference will this make? like what's in it for me kind of thing?

thanks. I only scored 29...but i don't understand how the test can be that accurate based on those questions and answer options :S. It seems like the only reason i didn't pass the autistic threshold is because i don't have a particular interest in numbers? Maybe theres already another thread discussing all this that i should go find *scurries off*

.

29 is high enough to start thinking about whether you are on the AS spectrum. I think 'normal' means a score of under 16. Women typically score lower than men anyway (again, I think - I am no expert).

The professionals - and this requires being interviewed and observed for about 3 hours if you're an adult takes maybe 3 hours - would still think 29 is a high-ish score. Mine incidentally was 34.

Getting treatment will depend on where in the world you are and as I am in England I am able (and only able) to speak about the system we have here) I am happy to help if I can. And if you'll let me, I would like to!

I'm from England too.... but I don't know if I'd really want to have treatment or not. I don't like the idea of people knowing I'm different- it's as though it would make my weirdness even more apparent if they could label it. And also, being observed & interviewed for 3hours sounds terrifying! What treatments are there? Do they help?

Welcome and don't accept depression. There are many treatments out there. Research them and really talk with your doctor. He is supposed to be your advocate concerning your health. Work with him and keep researching on your own using the web. Take care...see you on the forums.
