What is your first name?

Age: 31

Location: Connecticut, US

Hobbies and Interests: history, law, political science, sports, nature, skeptic topics, Internet security, the USSR, the Cold War, chemistry

Why are you here? practice improving my dealings with people; alleviate loneliness

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I am actually diagnosed with OCD, which I have had all of my life. There was one doctor who once suggested adult autism when she gave me a long interview and all of my social problems and enjoyment of "geek" interests became clear. She suspected it because not all of my obsessions & compulsions are always distressing ones. Some of them are neutral or pleasant or just random. That put her on the track of suspecting me to have some kind of mild autistic-type of tendency, I think.

Favorite subjects: ^^^

Year/Grade: BA 2001, unfortunately ended up being in History, when I failed out of pre-med and then engineering :(

Favorite music: I am a Spanish speaker & listen to all different styles of Latin music...I also like the European composers Tchaikovsky, Sibelius & the one who wrote "Peer Gynt"- I think that would be Grieg?

Books: I have a lot of trouble reading sometimes; but my favorite authors are Jules Verne, Nikolai Gogol & Cervantes

TV shows/Movies: not into much TV in recent years b/c programming has, IMO, really gone downhill. I used to like older comedies like Taxi, Sanford, etc. As far as movies, I watch one favorite one repeatedly for a long time, and then watch another one constantly, etc., until I get tired of it. Lately, I have been watching The Goonies and a Korean horror called "The Red Shoes", a weird modern take on the Andersen fairy tale.

Instrument: I played a whole bunch of instruments for years until I screwed up the cubital tunnel of my elbow. I taught piano for almost 4 yrs. despite my disorder(s) and am pretty proud of having been able to do that for as long as I did.

Do you like sports? I enjoy watching tennis & baseball, and I am planning to start playing tennis myself. I really admire the strength of the athletes, and I enjoy watching the action. The only thing is that I do not always understand the rules of the game v. well, and am not really into cheering and fan behavior...I just enjoy watching the game in my own way.

Family: family of origin; but I am single & childless

Clothing: see username :)

How did you find this website? Google

Job: unemployed 2.5 yrs.

Plans for the future? get into even better shape, improve social problems, make at least 1 good friend, find a way to work again (lost several jobs to the OCD)

Any comments? nah, I guess that I have talked a lot already.

Guten Tag, KodeMeister!

I envy you, starting in physics now. I was a physics major and ended up working in computers. What areas of physics interest you? Might I try to sell you on string theory? It seems to be really heating up, and the math involved is fantastic.

How do you like math proofs? As a physics guy I thought of proofs as a waste of time - math was a tool for physics, just give me the results so I can use them to solve problems. Now I've completely come pi degrees around and like pure math more than physics. If you'd like to do string theory I would try to learn some abstract algebra and start in topology to get a leg up.

I don't know how you are for popular science books but I'd recommend Green's The Elegant Universe if you haven't read it already, and of course "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman" is a must for all larval physicists!

Best of luck! --rob
