These rules were determined by 2 leaders, Napoleon who was left handed and thus forced everyone to use the right. The other enforced this rule in the late 1700's as law, and was carried over the the US. After the independence day, they wanted to break all British ties and used the other side of the road.
The problem is likely driving skill
The problem with this is that like you said, the US switched because we didn't want to be connected to Britain, but the other problem is that us southpaws have to conform.
