Hi everyone. I am so relieved and encouraged to find this forum.

I live in Pound Ridge, NY (Westchester County) and my son, 12, has AS. He will be starting in a new school district in two weeks, and we are hopeful that this year will be a good one for him. We were previously in Ridgefield, CT (Fairfield County), where my son attended school from kindergarten - 6th grade.

He received the AS dx approximately 3 years ago, and has been receiving special ed services since 2nd grade. Prior to 2007, his IEP was for "Emotional Disturbance". This has since been updated to "Autism", as that is the closest bucket on the form.

Son is starting to exhibit "tween/teen" behavior, which is always fun (lol), but combined with AS, it makes for difficult terrain! I have trouble differentiating areas of concern vs. typical tween/teen behavior. I hope I'm explaining this correctly...

I am seeking parent support groups for AS kids in this area. I do not know anyone in the district and would like to be able to find other parents and kids in a similar situation. I have been on the NYS Ed websites as well as the local district sites, but can't seem to find anything local. So I am reaching out here in the hope that there may be some folks in my area who see this.

I also am excited to join this group, as I spend a lot of time online and find that online forums are incredibly supportive and helpful. I have a lot of experience in dealing with school issues and would love to help in any way I can, whether it be advice on school stuff, or just a supportive "I know exactly how you feel".

Thanks for listening - I look forward to more interaction!

PS - I'm not really crabby, my online name is an allusion to my astrological sign :)

I hope you are able to find the people you need. We formed a group in Vancouver, WA of twelve families called Autism Community Services and we were able to get companion homes for most of our kids. My non-verbal, violent, autistic daughter is so much happier to have her own home now with a companion her own age. Because it's her home, everything in it is hers and nobody yells at her for what she does with it.

Welcome!! I have an almost 11 year old with AS. I can relate to the teen/tween behavior!

Your community must have some support groups. Do you have a children's hospital? If so I'd call the mental health and neurology departments and ask what resources they know of.

Good luck, and welcome!
