I just found out that I have Asperger's last week. (I'm 23)
I'm still reeling; just don't know how to feel; my whole life I've felt out of place and I always thought it was something I was doing wrong.
Should I go in to have an official diagnosis, even though I know I already have it? What do you guys think?
My sister's as*hole boyfriend is telling everyone and their dog that I'm mentally ret*d. Do any of you know someone like that? I'm furious about it, which is why I'm up so late and here on the forum; just trying to cool my blood.
Is AS something you guys keep to yourselves or do you like to be upfront about it?
Anyhoo, this seems like a great community and I can't wait to see what you guys have to say.
Thanks.

I keep my AS to myself outside of online groups.

I saw your anime site, your work is great. I have two cousins that are into that. One has HFA, the other is NT.

Anyway, welcome to WP!

Tim

All my friends at school know that I have AS, and their cool about it. However, if someone were to shout it out during assembly, out comes the shotgun. Nah, just kidding, but I'd still be pretty pissed off. I'm 16, just so you know, and I'd LOVE to know how to draw anime better. Any tips?

Hello Jobe, and welcome to the site.

A lot of us have been through the experience of spending years trying to figure out what we were doing wrong, then finding out about asperger's, and everything makes sense.

There isn't any standard agreement here about whether telling people about asperger's is a good idea, or who to tell, or whether it's worth getting an official diagnosis. What's best for one person may not be best for somebody else. I can give you my own thoughts, but I suggest you consider what different people say and figure out what's best for you.

Regarding telling people, there's a cultural universal I find interesting. Jesus is quoted as saying, "Cast not your pearls before swine, lest they turn and rend you." The chinese describe the same thing as "playing a fiddle for an ox," and the japanese talk about "giving gold coins to a cat." You might want to consider telling people who would understand, or people who should know, but maybe not everybody.

Based on my own experiences, I have the same respect for mental health professionals that I have for politicians and lawyers. Other people have had different experiences, so they have different opinions. If you think getting a diagnosis would be good for you for whatever reason, go ahead.

ret*d people are human beings who get treated very badly. They also have to take abuse from aspies and academics and liberals and people who would never think of abusing blind people or people in wheelchairs.

You have to figure out what's best for yourself. Best wishes to you.

Hi!

Welcome to Wrongplanet!

There was a contestant on a game show called "Press Your Luck" by the name of Jobe. You don't happen to be him, do you?

I hope you enjoy posting here!

True. I shouldn't be so deeply offended when compaired to a ret*d person; they're just people trying to get by, just like you and me (and everyone else).
btw, Thanks for your sage advise, Canyon Wind.

Nope, not a game show contestant. In fact, my name isn't actually "Jobe." Years ago, my baby brother as he was learning to speak, mispronounced "Joseph" as "Jobe" and the name stuck. Mostly because that was also the name of the socially ackward protagonist from Stephen King's Lawnmower Man.

When asked this in the past I'd just tell people to lock themselves away in a room for all their life and do nothing but draw. It was easy for me, but I believe (now) that's a symptom of my AS.

And to everyone else: Thanks for all the complements of my artwork and the support!
And "Church of Garlic"?!

That's ok. The Jobe I am thinking of is black.

What is your real name?

It's Joseph. And how do you know I'm not black?

Oh, I'm sorry!

I could be jumping to conclusions there.
