Why are you here? *Goes into philosophy mode...*. Nah, I have been unemployed for several years and I was looking for jobs as usual, but everything in my area seems to involve "Bubbly, team-spirited, phone oriented, outgoing person..." etc. I got frustrated and typed "What jobs can someone with Asperger's do?" to give me some sort of filtering system, and one of your discussions came up . The site looked interesting and (hopefully) friendly without online bullies, so I thought I'd say hi. Hi!
When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I'm not, officially. My GP refuses to countenance the fact that I might be AS. Every time I ask him to arrange a diagnosis, he puts me off, *Sigh*. But my family have had to deal with 'problems' from me since around 1986, and my sister was browsing the Net a couple of years ago, found something on AS and suggested it might be the root cause. So within the family, we're all pretty agreed that I'm AS, since I've done online tests and fit a lot of the profile. But I can't say that officially.
Favorite subjects: I loved English and RE at school . And Media at college. But English will always be my first love.
Favorite music: I tend to like songs, rather than specific bands. So, anything which speaks to me emotionally in the tone of the music and lyrics, rather than what the lyrics are actually saying! For instance, I really love "The flame" by Cheap Trick, but I have no idea what they're really singing about .
Books: SF/Fantasy nerd, without a doubt. I was taught to read at a very early age, so I started off with "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" when I was 6 and never really stopped, *LOL*. I've graduated onto more female friendly authors nowadays, such as Midori Snyder, Sharon Shinn, PC Hodgell, Meredith Anne Pierce, Susan Dexter, PC Wrede, etc. And I have a deep love of Georgette Heyer's sense of humour . It isn't that I dislike male authors, I just can't always relate to where they're coming from. I like Harry Harrison, Jack Chalker, James H Shmitz and John DeChancie too ;p.
TV shows/Movies: Absolute cult film/tv nerd, that's me . Anything with superheroes in, proper vampires, ghosts, etc is a good bet. So yes, I do like Supernatural, X-Files, Dollhouse, Firefly, Buffy, Medium, Being Human, etc. Plus CSI (although I really miss Grissom), NCIS, Human Target, Sons of Anarchy... Current fav films - Star Wars (will always be my first and last love), Empire, Watchmen, Losers, The A Team, Top Hat, Kiss me Kate (I'm a musicals fan) and I've been to see Les Mis in London. A lot, *LOL*.
Instrument: My Pfaff sewing machine, glory to its little chugging heart.
Do you like sports? Not remotely. I've never got into them. I just can't see the point of watching people doing something which would be far more fun to do yourself... and no, I don't do any either. Oh wait, yes I do! I forgot, I'm a live-roleplayer, so I fight a lot, although I'm more inclined to let people come to me than chase them around the field. Saves energy and tires them out. I've had varied martial arts and weapons training since I was 13, so I'm ok. Definately not Bruce Lee though. There's a guy in our collective who's been doing Kendo for 25 years, and he can take me apart, *L*. Good to train against, though.
Family: Dad (also suspected AS) whom I absolutely adore, mum (mental health social worker, thank god!) who I gave hell to as a teen and sister who is more successful than Gordon Gecko, extremely intimidating and who doesn't understand me at all, *L*.
Clothing: Jeans, t-shirt, jumper, trainers. In the right mood, I can be persuaded to go girly, but it's pretty rare. Which is wierd, since I love chiffon dresses in shops.
How did you find this website? See above .
Job: Ah. I had an extreme breakdown in 2000 and quit work to recover. Unfortunately, because I haven't been employed for the past 10 years, and have a tendancy to tell the truth about this, no one wants to employ me (my sister keeps telling me to lie in job applications. I can't!). It'd help if I knew what I want to do, but all I know is that it has to be £17,000 or above, preferably with no phone use or invasive colleagues, even better if it were me in a back room somewhere researching something and then being expected to make graphs about it . I'd be a fantastic proofreader, *L*. But, without provable experience and with a gap of ten years, I might as well be whistling Dixie. In this economic climate, no one will touch me.
Plans for the future? Get a job. Prove I can keep it. Get OFF Benefits. Move Love-of-life into home. Get married to L-o-L. Live happily ever after . Disney theme music optional.
Any comments? Nah, not really. I hope you're all nice and I haven't over-shared as usual?

Why are you here?
I suspect I have either AS or ADD, or both. This is a way to research the subject, and see if I can figure out how to mitigate/overcome the major issues in my life. When I was younger, I had certain compulsive behaviors, and would constantly obsess about the oddest things. For instance, I could make a point of packing a book to take to school, and I would still feel compelled to check my backpack multiple times before I left for school.
A more recent example would be closing my garage door after backing out to head to work. Half a block from my house I have to go around the block and re-assure myself that I actually did close the garage door. Thankfully, I've been able, for the most part, to break these types of compulsions through force of will alone.
When I was younger, my parents tried to get me to learn my multiplication tables, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not focus for more than a few minutes. I would attempt to focus, but in the end all that would happen would be that I would fall asleep. This caused a lot of problems with my parents who simply thought I was being lazy. I tried everything I could to explain that I really was *trying*. But they didn't believe me.
The lack of focus is actually the main thing I have left to overcome to be completely successful in life. I have a string of projects that I have started, and not finished. I desperately want to go back and finish them. Despite my inability to focus on most things, sometimes I can hyper focus to the point of losing track of time. I once worked 16 hours a day 7 days a week for 6 weeks to complete a project for work that was behind schedule.
Socially I have difficulties, but I have been making a conscious effort to improve my social skills. I started off simple, I made sure to say hello to the security guards every morning when I badge in. I started this effort four years ago, and now I can even chat and make small talk with the cafeteria staff.

When were you diagnosed? Yet to be diagnosed, I suspected autism in my early teens and psychiatrists suspected asperger's in my early teens too but never thought to inform me of their suspicions, it's only within the last year I've discovered asperger's and sought diagnosis - currently being fast-tracked through the system, waiting for an assessment date.
Favorite subjects: Loved biology. geology/geography and integrated humanities, but told physics was my best subject.
Favorite music: Rock - American, grunge, stoner and blues in particular, but I have eclectic tastes so I also love blues, rap, hiphop, classical, pop, dance, metal, pretty much anything that sounds good.
Books: I love anything written by Michael Marshall Smith - counts as science fiction I believe, also Talking Cock by Richard Herring, Euclid's Window by Leonard Mlodinow, and Quantum Questions by Ken Wilber. I like non-fiction on sexual health, science, and religion.
TV shows/Movies: Not big on TV or films, they require too much focus for too long when there's better things to do, but...

Family: An estranged mother, and a half-brother who I've never met.
Clothing: Dark blue jeans, black 'wife-beater' vest, black trainers, tattoo inspired jewellery, purple coat. I aim for somewhere between rock-chick and 'chola' style, but fall short on a daily basis.
How did you find this website? Web search, went to a UK forum first but found them far from friendly so came here.
Job: None, unemployed for 3 years, mostly due to problems with AS.
Plans for the future? To get a job would be nice, move into a house and all the usual jazz that comes with adulthood, but which is on hold during my unemployment...hell add to that some enjoying of what I've got left of my twenties. Start off with a job in a card shop to satisfy my OCD needs, but maybe one day have a career...one can hope.
Any comments? I'm awesome. That is all.
