Hi - this is my second introduction. My name is Andrew H. and I am 17 years old. I live in Stony Creek, PA, near Reading. I am very lonely. Anyone feel the same? What do you do to feel connected? I would feel grateful for any advice I receive. Thank you!

Hi, Andrew. I'm 56yo and I live in Canada. I'm often lonely too. WP helps a lot. Also I do cyber volunteering which adds a whole dimension to my life. One of them is proofreading for The Gutenberg Project. Hang in there, I'm sure you'll meet lots of folks here.

Hi Andrew!
You say "I feel lonely", but, you could also tell yourself "today, I feel great", try it, repeat it in front of a mirror, I know it sounds silly, what do you have to lose? Try it, I bet you that you'll smile!

Do you exercise? I've noticed that that's a great way to feel better. Even 30 minutes walking, running, weightlifting, etc., will boost your mood.

And as Claradoon mentioned, have you tought about doing some volunteering? Or joining a local book club? That helps to meet people. You could also find a part time job, whatever to keep your mind busy.

Hi Andrew,

At 17...I assume you are still in school?

Any possibility of joining a club/group or team you are interested in? Could you start a club/group in your school...volunteer...moderate a forum...join an internet group...etc.

Start by looking at your strongest interests...then think how you can meet other people with the same interest.

That's good advice. Many years ago when I was particularly lonely and depressed, even suicidal, a counsellor advised me to force myself to smile while looking in the mirror. I reluctantly tried it, feeling extremely foolish, and in fact it looked so ridiculous that I couldn't help laughing, and at that point the smile became genuine rather than unforced, and I soon started feeling better.

Anyway, welcome to WP and I hope we can make you feel good!

glad it worked Rory!, and yes, it's so ridiculous, that makes you realize "what attitude will I take in life? bitter/angry/sad? or relaxed/I-can-do-it"

now Andrew, check this video and try dancing... if you are feeling adventurous try the steps of the second girl... :P

"Etienne de Crecy - Le patron est devenu fou!"

I can't dance, and I feel so dumb trying them, and through the day I laugh just remembering :P

Its a cliche but true: laughter is the best medicine. It is important not to take oneself too seriously, and also to be able to see beyond oneself and recognize the absurdity of this world. Otherwise one is on the path to madness.
